Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Didnt see a weekend thread but did anyone see Figueroa's goal against Stoke, about 5-10 yards inside his own half gets a free sees Soreson off his line and bangs it in the net. Fabulous goal, it wasnt a looper but stayed flat all of the way.

    Goal of the decade?

Absolute cracker. Doubt that goal will be topped. Absolutely perfect. Delighted I decided to watch that game. Was in two minds whether to watch it or not and it turned out to be one of the best games I've seen this season. Well chuffed! :D

Yeah was a cracker of a game, wanted Wigan to win. :( Sorenson was a mile off his line for the peno but I guess it wasnt even a peno!

Alonsos goal against Newcastle still beats it, even if it was Harper in goal. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,625 ✭✭✭✭Johner

Nah Harper fell, Figs was better. :D

    I like.

Alonso's wasnt better.Figuerora's flew straight and flat and went straight into the top corner.Keeper didn't fall over either.

    Figs was miles better.

    Some strike, what a goal

Cracking goal, but paul robinson's was the best. He took it from just outside the 18 yard box!!!

Hardly, he chipped a keeper that was on his arsé.

But from several yards further out!

Jeez not much in it, then of course is the fact Fig's was from more of an angle which would make it a longer distance than a compable shot which was more 'straight on'.

Easily a better goal, come on Mike - admit it!

That was a bit of a fluke if I recall, it wasn't even a shot was a kickout, and just bounced over Ben Foster who was poorly positioned.................

Wonderful goal, I can't see this being topped but if it is it will need to be something extra special.

Ever heard of Pythagoras' theorem? It wasn't several yards further at all, and the keeper for Figs could do literally nothing about it, whereas Harper fell straight on his ass. In no way shape or form is Alonso's better, let's not be THAT biased on here.

Thats what I should have said - didn't articulate myself very well there!

This isn't as spectacular at all really, but the technique is just perfect, and haven't seen a volley as powerful as this since Mendieta. (Phil Ball agrees with me)

It's the first goal, build up starts at 20 second mark.

    Pick that one out

    Some power in that shot

I was watching this match earlier live and I remember thinking at the time that Sorenson would have had a hard time saving that even if he'd been on his line. It had a bit of power and was right in the top corner. Some hit. Lovely little bendy run up to it as well.

There's two different types of goal that'll always get nominated for goal of the season - it'll be a one off belter like that one or else it'll be a 10 pass movement from one box to the other with a tap in finish.

    Nah

He was in possesion of the ball, had to time look around, finish wasnt as good and the keeper would have got it if he didnt fall over.

Probably not as great a goal but very similar and Chilavert was a keeper. Best quality vid I could find Im afraid.

    He was a quality keeper.

And a deadball specialist if I remember correctly

Scored a good few goals for Paraguay too, 8 I think

Some goal by Figueroa. It should get goal of the season and Id say defo a contender for goal of the decade. Much better than Beckhams against Wimbledon and abit further out aswell. Let out a scream "what a goal" when it went in and I rarely do that:pSCREAMER!:)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,709 ✭✭✭CR 7

Taking into account who it is, this is comfortably better.:P

    2 new contenders from tonight:

    Milner V Sunderland :eek::eek::eek:

    And

    Valencia V Wolves. :D:cool:

figueroa, goal of the season so far!

was watching the game live in a video stream. Could not believe it when I saw him wandering over to the ball and just hitting it. Like he was on the training ground almost and having a free strike.

figueroa, goal of the season so far!.

Yep, this thread is done and dusted. Figueroa has it sown up already!!

    Figueroa goal was a peach

Beckhams goal in 1997 was very good goal but always taught the goal was bit over played on Sky Sports over and over

Oh relax it's only a bit of fun and a chance to admire some cracking goals

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Watched it live, couldnt believe it, was gutted though as Sorensen is my Fantasy Premier League keeper, did well to save the peno from 6ft though. :D

Goal of the season for me anyway, its going to take a volley from the half way line or something equally ridiculous to top that goal.

I'm still not convinced it tops this strike from earlier this season to be honest (18 seconds in).

Indeed. I have seen many other goals i prefer to this one. Technique makes a better goal than distance. Something like that zidanesque volley darren fletcher scored earlier on in the season is infinitely more difficult a skill to pull off.

That's very harsh. While I agree I'd rather see a 20-pass move culminate in a finish rather than a hit and hope smash, there was tremendous technique from Figueroa.

I'm not saying what he did was easy by any means. For example, take ronaldo's 40 yard goal against porto last season, completely different technique to figueroa's, and a bit(15- 20 yards:)) closer, but a far better goal.

How is Ronaldo's a far better goal? Figueroa's was nearly twice the distance out and flew higher into the net. The only thing favouring Ronaldo's was that he was running with the ball rather than it standing still, but IMO Figueroa's was a more spectacular and difficult to execute goal, and you're less likely to see an effort like that again than Ronaldo's.
