You get what you pay for , The Harley Bentons are junk one was gifted to a young cousin of mine and I can tell you it was possibly one of the worst creations Ive ever heard.

As for the orange county thing - Ive no idea but Id imagine its spectacularly bad.

If your going for a strat type, Id recommend a Yamaha Pacifica, the build quality on these is reasonable for the price in my experience so would say they are value for the money. They stay in tune, the components are reasonable and tone wise they arent bad for a budget guitar.

Harley bentons are cheap & cheerful for a while, but in my experience they are awful for staying in tune. So they might do for a kid starting off, but I cant imagine anyone attempting to gig with one.
I've never seen the Peavey one before, but realistically any guitar under €100 is not going to be great.

+1 for the Yamaha pacifica, its been recommended on here a ton of times and I've yet to meet someone with one who wasnt happy with it.

I've had more Harleys in for repair than i can remember, poor wiring coupled with the fact that it tends to be an inexperienced player. Not saying that being in experienced is a bad thing at all, just that they dont do little things like wrapping the lead under the strap so the input gets pulled a bit. The neck is kind of sore on the hands when playing after a while i found.

    Pacifica or Squier.

anyone know if either of the two guitars above are any good? i have only ever played acoustic so want to get an electric to see what its like. i dont want anything major, just something easy enough on the wallet but not a guitar thats gonna be sh*te either. looked for reviews on the above but found nothing

First up, surely some of your buddies have electric guitars?
Why not ask if you can play theirs to see what it's like?

Also, as you are an electric noob, there are two primary tones with electrics; single coil and humbucker.
Single coil is like Henrix, Knopfler (sp?), RHCP etc. and humbucker is like AC/DC, Metallica, Alice In Chains. Single Coil is more clean sounding and more funky, humbucker is thicker and gainier.
Which do you think would suit you better?

Pacifica is a good option as it has both types of pickups.
Squires are also a good low cost option, but are usually single coil only.

Can't comment on the ones you posted though as I've no experience of them.

You could probably get a Squier for around that price in a shop here in Dublin. Squier is part of the Fender outfit & make good value for money stuff. Try ringing around to see who has what. The Squier Christmas pack also includes a small amplifier which you would need for an electric guitar, if you don't already have one.

thanks for the responses lads, this is what i went for in the end.
the only other thing i would have perhaps liked was a whammy bar but this should be grand to start out on.
the reason i've never played electric before is because none of my mates play guitar. i just play for myself rather than gigging or jamming with others.

Decent decisions for the money there Niamh. The Cube in particular is an excellent little amp:)
