John Frusciante has finally quit the Red Hot Chili Peppers, according to a reliable source close to the band.

The guitarist had for a long time expressed doubt about returning when the four-piece reunited in October after a two-year break. But drummer Chad Smith said he was confident Frusciante would be back – until recently he told Classic Rock Magazine he was no longer allowed to discuss the situation. He stated: “I’ve been told to star away from John questions.”

Now one of the Chili Peps’ entourage tells Music Radar: “Mentally, John checked out a long time ago. He’s interested in doing his own thing. The whole big rock band machinery just doesn’t appeal to him any more.”

And the band are already working with another guitarist – Josh Klinghoffer, who’s toured with the band in the past and has also worked with Frusciante on his solo projects.

Frusciante, 39, left the band once before, after the Chili Peps’ success with Blood Sugar Sek Magick in 1992. He fought off addiction to heroin and rejoined in 1999 to record return-to-form album Californication. Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction fame had played guitar in the interim.

The band source says: “Josh has been on everybody’s radar for some time. He’s extremely popular within a circle of LA musicians.

“The big thing the band have to consider is, can Josh write great songs? Can he help push them forward? Everybody knows he can play – but the Peppers need somebody who can come up with amazing mataerial and get them moving again.

    hmmm...

i was a very big fan of the Red hot chili peppers for most of my early teenage years. i'm not that disappointed however to hear this news. I was slightly disappointed when they took a break originally but now i think they should have stopped the first time john left. it may seem a bit harsh but they're actually not that good anymore and should probably just call it a day

Fair play to him if he has left the band. His solo albums show far more ideas and musical experimentation than he has got the chance to do with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 10 years now nearly. I was a big fan of theirs up until their last two albums which just sound boring compared to their earlier stuff whereas his solo albums are always highly listenable

Disappointed IMO, love his solo stuff. Love his stuff with the Chili Peppers too though.

    it's official

''When I quit the band, over a year ago, we were on an indefinite hiatus. There was no drama or anger involved, and the other guys were very understanding. They are supportive of my doing whatever makes me happy and that goes both ways.

To put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction. Upon rejoining, and throughout my time in the band, I was very excited about exploring the musical possibilities inherent in a rock band, and doing so with those people in particular. A couple of years ago, I began to feel that same excitement again, but this time it was about making a different kind of music, alone, and being my own engineer.

I really love the band and what we did. I understand and value that my work with them means a lot to many people, but I have to follow my interests. For me, art has never been something done out of a sense of duty. It is something I do because it is really fun, exciting, and interesting. Over the last 12 years, I have changed, as a person and artist, to such a degree that to do further work along the lines I did with the band would be to go against my own nature. There was no choice involved in this decision. I simply have to be what I am, and have to do what I must do.

Sending love and gratitude to you all.''
