Eirgrid (A separate and independent state body) owns and controls all the grid

ESB Power Generation is one of the companies within ESB Group responsible for selling electricity (30% of all electricity on this Island, some monopoly eh?) to the all ireland common auction/market which is regualted by SER

    .

The tranmission of the ESB assets still hasnt been completed.. ESB still controll the assets...They cant agree on the value of the assets its alos linked to the ESB employee's of past and present in effect they own 5% of the assets.. its still up for discussion with the unions....

Also worth taking a look at http://www.sem-o.com/
SEMO is the market operator responsible for the administration of the Single Electricity Market. The organization is managed as a contractual joint venture between EirGrid, the transmission system operator for the Republic of Ireland, and the System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI). SEMO is licensed and regulated cooperatively by the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) in Ireland and the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation (NIAUR).

Also on the point of greener power costing less this couldn't be further from the truth.. in actual fact... when buying power from green sites wind etc we have to in effect guarantee the power by also committing to putting a guaranteed power source on stand by (in effect doubling the cost) to insure we can get the power in the event the green supplier cant provide us with the projected power gen.. green power aint so green
