There are huge challenges in the world we live in today but if we can give children a good start in life then maybe we are half way there. There are many families who get by reasonably fine on their own but sometimes things don't work out according to plan and children can bear the brunt of the fallout. It's important for society to take care of it's future generations so that when it is their turn to look after the young and the elderly they can bear the burden well and volunteers can help with that.
Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children "To advocate on behalf of all children in Ireland, and to provide a range of independent and unique services which are preventative and empowering in nature."
Barnardos "Barnardos' mission is to challenge and support families, communities, society and government to make Ireland the best place in the world to be a child, focusing specifically on children and young people whose well-being is under threat."

Don't be too discouraged by having to go through background checks and the time it may take before starting volunteering as it is important that safety for children is put first. There are also NGOs that work with children abroad you may find some ideas on this thread here.
