Hi all.

Recently my Dell Inspiron 9400 started having trouble - the screen would freeze with green lines across it. After a few reboots the system eventually just displayed a black screen. The Startup/Bios won't even show.

I've checked the screen's connection to the motherboard and it's fitted securely. The backlight is also on when I switch on the laptop so I can only put this error down to the gpu. Problem is I've tried Ebay and they don't seem to have any replacement cards.

I've also tried contacting Dell - but for some reason the site won't even accept my Service Tag.

Anyone have any idea as to where I can get my hands on one of these GPUs?

You may as well try the "oven trick" while you're at it, I've heard of it working more than once with nvidia's 7/8 series.
It's an interesting experiment in any case.

Thanks for the info lads. I reckon I'll go down the old baking route seeing as I have nothing to lose on my current card.

Have the new 01/12/09 BIOS on hand as well; in case I have any luck. Apparently it was released solely to deal with this problem.

Hopefully I can do something about it.

Oven trick fixed an 8800GTX for me, and I'm going to try it on a dead 8800GTS soon.

Update: Just want to say that I'm now typing from my 9400 - using a freshly baked 7900 GS GPU. I baked it in a preheated oven set at 200C for 12 minutes. I let it sit outside the oven until it cooled and immediately reattached the heat sink; screwing everything back together.

First thing I did was run a diagnostic. Everything's running smoothly. I then installed Bios A10 and can already hear the extra activity coming from the GPU fan.

How long did the GPU last after you baked it, Lethal?
