I think we need a separate commentary thread on the 1000 mile challenge. At the moment any comments made the day before can be buried under 3 pages of updates.

It would also allow for recognition of intermediate targets, every 100 miles or half way there: 500 miles! High fives all round etc. etc.

PS - I'll definitely make the 1000 next year!

FWIW my vote's with the keep it simple, leave it the same camp. I can see already that I'll be finding it tough to get to the 1000.

Looks like the majority would like to keep it the same, no harm I suppose, would there be any interest in a consecutive days running thread or a new table under the 1000, just ideas.

    Maybe:

    Name|Miles|Days total | days in a row |Total Time|Elevation gain
    xxx|xxx|xxx|xxx|xxx|xxx

We could have whatever column titles people want (as many or as few) and you can order by any column so you can see how you rank in whatever category you want. And if you don't track a value just leave it blank but fill in what you do track

Ooh I like that bar the elevation gain, think it may only apply to a handful out of 100 or so.

I predict lots of problems with the table getting messed up on people updating their stats. I do like the idea of adding stuff, but we had enough problems with just the current straight list format getting reguarly messed up. :D

I agree with Robinph - the table will cause all sorts of problems when being updated. The old version was simplicity at its best. Can't say I'd be counting the total days I've run, or days in a row etc - the total miles is easy as my excel sheet does that for me. I've no other data besides that.

I was thinking about "the rules" on a jog the other day... Rather than having cut off dates for people to start would it be best to say that you must enter before you've completed 200 miles? And that you must update your totals more than every 100 miles? This way you'd get a fair reflection of what's going on live around you.

This year's one (which I lost interest in because I was too far down the table! ;)) was too clunky - having to reply with quote, remove the tags, remove the bolded text, add on your miles, move yourself up the list to where you should be in the table etc.

Add into this the problems that occured when two people posted at the same time, so one of them would lose their update.

Surely there's some web application/google document etc. that removes a lot of this hassle? Then the thread here can just be used for commentary and banter.

How about another type of challenge -- 50 runs in 50 days or 100 in 100. The 1000 miles challenge seems a bit silly if its over by March as people said.

How bout a 100 miles a month challenge.

I'd love to be adding in some of the other fields that people have suggested as well, and then being able to sort the table based on those fields or other fancy things. Problem is that the only way of doing that and still being within the realm of boards.ie is with the bbcode table, and I think that would just be a bit too complicated to maintain for many people, we have those for the Best Of thread, but that then introduces even more tags for people to try and get their heads around, I even spotted recently that I'd made a cock-up editing one of my entries in that thread recently, but I've been too embarrassed to go back and fix it yet.

There are over 100 people that at least made a start in the 1000 mile thread, although admittedly less people have kept up with it to the end. The Best Of thread look to have a longer list, but there are only a handful of people actually going to the bother of figuring out how to edit it.

A Google Docs spreadsheet could be a potential way of doing things, everybody knows how to fill in a spreadsheet, right? But how many people have Google accounts?

Just as a test though let see how many people do have accounts here:

I can see it but can't edit it.

Were you signed into Google? I've just changed the permissions so you don't need to sign in to edit now.

How bout a monthly total for each runnner... And a column for the percentage change from the previous month. That way people can compare them against themselves.

    name|jan|feb|march|percantgechangeonpreviousmonth
    scottreynolds|100|110|123|10%

Took me a while to get the formatting sorted.

The 1000 miles challenge seems a bit silly if its over by March as people said.
It's only over by March if you're at that level, and only a couple of posters are. It goes back to the challenge or competition question that came up a few times over the year. I'm strongly on the side of it being a personal challenge, not a race. While you can't get away from the competitive element, for me the achievement was completing, not completing a day ahead of Woddle (he may feel different :) ).

The spread over the year was quite even over the rest of the year. I've thought of whipping something up to extract the numbers from the posts and do a few graphs. (Of course the new baby, new job and new 1000 mile challenge starting soon mean this will never happen).
Took me a while to get the formatting sorted.

And that's why it probably wouldn't work.

Not picking on all your ideas, Scott, I quite like the sound of this...
How bout a 100 miles a month challenge.
I made 9 out of 12, but that's better than 1/12 last year and 3/12 in 2008. My plan to get at least one 100km cycle in per month didn't last too long.

I'd tend to use google docs for this and then have a monthly update copied into a boards thread.

I'm worried that we are going to lose this 1000 mile thread or it's going to be so flashy with all bells and lights etc that it won't be as effective as 2009 thread.

EVeryone thought that this years thread was very good just look at how long it has stayed on page 1!!!!

Oh yeah people should remember that it is a 1000 mile challenge not a competition and it's not over in march for most of us!!!!!

Lads if you thought it was so good and enjoyed it so much that you voted for it why mess with it?
