Methinks Dessa spent a lot of time listening to Jean Grae.

It's a valid comparison but there's so much more to Dessa's music.

i'd tend to agree, Dessa'a lyrics are a lot deeper and more meaningful. She has one of the greatest lines i've heard....."from cutting all the corners we have an avalanche of sawdust".

Not disregarding Jean Grae, she too is great.

Oh wow...just...no. God no. Never. Jean Grae is the far superior MC and lyricist. Far superior. Dessa sounds like someone trying to be Jean Grae (which was my original point).

There is just so much wrong with this post. So much. And that line is utterly horrible, it's completely devoid of nuance and just seems smug. It's a perfect example of the kind of reason I can't stand people like P.O.S., and to a lesser extent, Dessa, it's music and lyrics badly lacking a subtle and deft touch.

What's up with Jean Grae these days anyway? Is she still making music or what? I know she announced her retirement a while back, but then Kweli was still saying she's recording etc etc. Would really hope she is making music, would love to hear some new stuff from her. Absolutely fantastic mc!

Is she still with Kweli? Any chance she's show up at his gig in dublin next week? I know she played support to him at a gig here a while back. I'm raging i had to miss that one, would have been great to see her.

hadn't every listened to Dessa before that song, so won't comment on her. All i will say is that if she has gotten/can get to Jean Grae's level she'll be pretty good.

Jean Grae is a very very good MC, far more flexible than Dessa, more versatile and alot more output.
But Dessa has crafted this lovely niche for herself which is in my eyes rather unique. I think her lyrics paint a beautiful image or what she is trying to say and doesnt necessarily conform to what hip hop 'should' sound like without being overtly avante guarde.

okay, going to put it out there, B. Dolan's album is going to be album of the year.....heard a few tracks and they are unbelievably good. It's all hip hop too, no poetry or spoken word.

Another album that has slipped under the radar is the next and last Little Brother album. Leftback is gonna be released this year. Origianlly planned to be a farewell EP but it;s been extended to a full album.

Normally, I'd be squealing with excitement at a new Nas album, but apparently it's a half hiphop/reggae album with Damian Marley. Not something I'd really be interested in. Might give it a listen nonetheless.

Most of that I agree with, but Common?
His last album bored the hell out of me and was horribly overproduced. Shame becuase Be which was only a few years ago is an absolute masterpiece. :(

It's not bad at all, but a very safe album. Not like deadringer where you dont know what to expect next.

Or Since We Last Spoke which I still think is an absolute belter of an album. Its solid enough but nothing really grabs your attention, I suppose after the epic fail that was The Third Hand we should not be that harsh on the guy. :(:(:(:(

I actually like the 3rd Hand, nice kinda background vibe to it.

Anywho, news that a lot of people will be happy about, a new Sage Francis album this year.

It's called Li(f)e and is released the greatest date in the calendar year, May 11th.

But, here's the kicker, it's going to be recorded with indoe rock bands that he has met on the road touring.

    Could be interesting.

After my first listen, the first half of the album is superb and it kinda hits a bit of a decline after that. Second half is still good but doesnt keep pace with the first half.
Track 5 is the standout for me, crazy drums.

Track listing and album cover from hiphopdx
On April 20, Hall Of Justus Records will release what's already been billed as Little Brother's final album. LeftBack, perhaps considered a sequel to 2007's Getback, is Phonte Coleman and Rapper Big Pooh's final dance together in a career that has changed independent Hip Hop since 2003's ABB Records release The Listening.
    LB-AlbumCover.jpg

With the first two albums including then-group member and producer 9th Wonder, the group would ascend to signing a major label deal with Atlantic Records to release The Minstrel Show. Independent again, LeftBack marks the group's first project away from ABB Records, though it does include familiar voices, including Khrysis (of The Away Team), Darien Brockington, Jozeemo, Carlitta Durand, and Zo!, all of the Justus League family.

Coney Island Brooklyn emcee Torae appears on a song, as former B.R. Gunna producer Young R.J. and fellow Michigan native Denaun "Mr." Porter offer production.

"We wanted the fans to have that moment of nostalgia when looking at this artwork" said Rapper Big Pooh in a statement. "You are able to take a quick journey from the beginning of our careers to the end as Little Brother by glancing at the artwork."

Both Phonte and Pooh have pursued solo projects in recent years.

    1. Curtain Call (Prod. By Khrysis)
    2. Table For Two Feat. Jozeemo & Yahzarah (Prod. By Khrysis)
    3. Tigallo For Dolo (Prod. By Khrysis)
    4. Revenge Feat. Truck North & Median (Prod. By Khrysis)
    5. So Cold Feat. Chaundon (Prod. By King Karnov)
    6. Second Chances Feat. Bilal & Darien Brockington (Prod. By Denaun Porter)
    7. Go Off Go On (Prod. By Khrysis)
    8. What We Are Feat. Quiana (Prod. By Young R.J.)
    9. After The Party Feat. Carlitta Durand (S1 and Caleb’s Who Shot JR Ewing Remix) (Prod. By S1 and Caleb)

    11. Get Enough Pt. 2 Feat. Khrysis (Prod. By Khrysis)
