Can anyone identify the large building on the hill? (Top RHS). I reckon it is somewhere
between Sidney Park and Old Youghal Road. There is a link to a high-res version on
    the page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Patrick_Street_Cork2.jpg

    Many Thanks.

    Interested to know too.

It says it will be Wikipedia's photo of the day on Patrick's Day next year :)

Great detail in the full version: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1e/Patrick_Street_Cork2.jpg

Is the Father Mathew Statue in this photo? It says the photo is from 1890-1900, but the statue says it was unveiled in 1864: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Fr_Matthew.jpg

Would it be Sydney House? In 1871 there's a place of that name registered to a Fitzgibbon, Victor B. see link.

It is in there, Centre Middle of the Photo, you will see an arrow like thing pointing up, right above that is Fr. Matthew. Hard to see, but he is there!

It is a stunning picture. I have found the exact spot where it was taken.
The length and angle of the shadows show that it was taken before
midday during the summer. The street was full of buses and Christmas
stuff today. I will try to do a then-and-now picture next summer.

Think that house was part of Christians until the 80's. My brother had a few classes up there (Invokes powerful memories of the smell of mouldy sandwiches). It was knocked to make way for the new Christians building.Such a shame. Used to belong to Winston Churchills grandparents. My dad's from up that area so I'll ask him to have a look at it. Beautiful picture.

    This is a great thread

I couldn't decide if that Pana image was a painting or photo, It must be a BW photo that was colourized by hand? because Patks Bridge is in BW

That house looks so elegant, like something in Cobh overlooking the Rail yard. Its demolition is a real loss to the heritage and the people of Cork, even if it had remained in Private Ownership it would have shone a beam of excellence down to Pana.

I recently walked from St Lukes to Patricks Hill, and the place is looking run down... the red bricks on the once elegant three stories buildings are weathered and crumbling, most are converted into flats.

Well, when people were getting €1000+ / month for any old crappy standard of a flat, they chopped up the houses into "apartments" (I use that term loosely)

Hopefully, a bit of a reality check in the property market might see them turned back into houses again.

There really needs to be tighter planning around what can be turned into multi-occupancy dwellings.

I'm not just being snobby, but many of these old buildings are totally unsuitable to be used as flats unless they're completely converted in a proper way.

What's there at the moment is just chopped up houses.

The landlords also need to be compelled to keep them in better condition.

There are some truly disgracefully dilapidated buildings around the City Centre, particularly around areas like Castle Street, Washington Street etc.

I'm also noticing that some of the grand houses along Patrick's Hill and Wellington Road are starting to look really shabby.

It's a shame as they're key parts of what makes up this city.
