Getting a new puppy tomorrow(8 and 1/2 weeks).
Wont have had any of her shots but have an appointment booked for first set on saturday morning.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to have the dog near another dog which has its vaccinations up to date?
    Thanks

i recently found myself with 6 puppies - long story - they where (and three still are) with their mom and Uncle Tyson who where both vaccinted and all doing fine, but i think it depends what the other dog gets up to, if the adult dog is out and about by itself (roaming) it could bring back diseases the new pup could pick up i believe - can i ask where you got the new pup - any photo's? :D

A puppy, if coming from a breeder should have had its first round of vaccinations at 6 weeks. How come this pup hasnt got any yet?

Is your other dog vaccinated and up to date?

Getting puppy from a friend of a friend.
    Is Labrador retriever cross.
Other dog would be walked daily but not let loose. Probably wont be much contact between the two but will both be in the house.
    No photos yet!!
Should have plenty by tomorrow night tho!!!:)

well in my case the puppies didn't have their vaccinations until just over 8 weeks as i was told 8 weeks was better - maybe he/she's getting the pup from someone who rescued a pregnant bitch like myself?

Most breeders should have pups vaccinated at 6 weeks as then by the time they are going to their new homes they are ready for their 2nd jabs then, just means they are ready to be walked etc a lot sooner than if they are only done from 8 weeks.

Pups that are microchipped etc are usually done at 6 weeks too so they can be registered so the vet will vaccinate at 6 weeks when they are microchipping.

Its the norm to have their first vacc's from 6 weeks.

Well I'd say if your dog is up to date on vaccinations, and it doesn't bring anything home you should be ok. If you're worried check with your vet (you can give them a quick ring) and you'll be getting the pup done on Sat.
Make sure *not* to bring the pup outside until 2 weeks after the final vaccination.
Keep your other dog away from other dogs when out for a walk just in case.
    Best of luck :)

was told by the vets that the second lot can not be done before 12 weeks regardless of when the first lot was done - OP also be carefull of you other dog going near other dogs poop when out as they can pick up worms from the poop on the ground

also the pup may not be coming from a "breeder" anyhew good on ya for asking OP

Thought pup should probably have had 1st set but when told it wouldnt.... just arranged to go to vet as soon as to get them started.
Was told by the Vet that they should be chipped when brought for 2nd set of shots...not first??
Other dog isnt mine...is parents in law's dog. My oh will go over to his parents xmas day and me to my own parents with the intention of me following him over later that evening and if possible bringing the puppy.

no i meant the "older" dog going near poop, not the puppy

    Ah right get ya now!!
Older dog wont be near puppy or his poop!!!
My concern was more so that the puppy would be walking around a house that the other dog had waked around....they probably wont actually have any direct contact with each other!
    Thanks for all your help!

Any breeders i know and i know a lot all get their pups chipped with their first vaccs at 6 weeks. My dog was chipped already when i got him at 8 and half weeks. The have to be chipped early so the breeder can register the litter with the IKC, as they MUST be chipped to register them and breeders have to register the litter early in order to have the papers back for new prospective owners.

See this link for info on vaccinations. 10 weeks is when they get their last one if they are done from 6 weeks.
    http://www.vets.ie/ask-alan/dog%20vaccinations.php

Just to add, pups/dogs can be vaccinated/chipped at any age, but most breeders will vaccinate/chip earlier rather than later so they can register litters and have all in order for new owners. :-)

When I had a litter of pups here from a rescue bitch they had their parvo vacc at 6 weeks, then their first 'proper' vacc at 8 weeks, and their final one at 10 weeks before they went off to their new homes. I got them chipped at their 10 week vaccination, but they weren't IKC registered. My vet told me that they can't do the final vacc until they are at least 10 weeks old.

My Vets said final one at 12 weeks - not even a day earlier - seems to be some confusion in the vet world - also my mum took one of ours in the UK and when she got her last vaccination the Vet there (in UK) said "Typical Irish, they've done the vaccine's the wrong way round" oops

Is it safe for 2 pups, both of whom have had their first vaccinations to stay together for a week or so? Both have been constantly monitored and watched since received.

All puppies that haven't completed their course of vaccinations are in danger, nobody can stay in the house with them for 10/12 weeks. Everytime someone comes into the house they could potentially be carrying something in on their shoes, clothes etc. I know one breeder, and there are probably plenty of others that shower and change their clothes when they come in the house before they go anywhere their newborn pups. You can only do what you can do.

So, just keep an eye on them, it would be better for them to have company, to help with their socialisation than to be on their own I'd think. So if neither of them go out, then they should be okay. We can't wrap them up in cotton wool unfortunately - they'd probably eat it:D

    Best of luck.
