We seem to have a lot of photo's being posted that are too big.

If your image is more than 800 pixels on the longest side it will be deleted. Please make sure that when you select an image from your hosting site that it is within the size limits (this is possible on Flickr & Pix.ie). If your hosting site does not have this facility then the native image you upload must be of the correct size.

Brilliant Robin shots.
Was up in snowy hills in Co. Limerick today hoping to get pic. of Robin in snow. Even left out food. Turns out I should have done same at lower altitude as that was where birds were.

Any advice on photographing Robins in snow appreciated.
How did you take this one; camera, aperture, speed. ?

I'm guessing you're asking about the one of him standing tall on the snow...
It's taken with a Sigma 70-300 on Nikon D60 . 300mm , f5.6, 1/400, iso200 . I try to always keep at least 1/400 or faster with the lens at the 300mm end as there's no vibration reduction and camera shake becomes an issue at slower speeds. So that meant I needed a good wide aperture and f5.6 was the widest available! Was coming out a bit dark at that so upped the iso to 200 ... happy with the D60's results up to iso400.

To get the shots, I left seeds and a couple of feeders on an up-turned bin. Then placed the spade beside it as a landing perch. Pulled the car right up beside it (couple of meters). Left the setup for a few hours for the birds to get comfortable. Then went out and sat in the car with the window partially open to photograph them as they landed on the perch! I generally left them in peace when they were just feeding or on the ground but that fella stood up so tall I just had to get the shot! The shot yesterday of him on the lump of snow (collapsed snowman) was actually taken through the dirty front window of the car, surprised it came out so clear!

I'm going to try leaving the 35m f`1.8 on a tripod near them next and try using the remote trigger. Hopyfully the other birds won't be as nervous of that setup - the robin's had his 15minutes! :rolleyes:

Took this today, nearly died of exhaustion after, trying to get back down the hill! Taken on a mobile, so sorry about it being so grainy. I need a proper camera.
