I'd imagine the main benefits would be for industry, exports and imports etc rather than tourism

for the money that was spent on NAMA we could build a few of these tunnels ...

the stupidest idea of the year is the "lets make everyone poorer and collapse the economy" idea from David McWilliams

as for over inflated sense of importance, how about this :D

I was going to contradict your first sentence until I remembered that NAMA was proposed in 2008......

Great idea. It'd get the construction industry back to work and reduce the unemployment rate in no time.

Mind you, I think we should build the tunnel to Britain after we have finished building one to France - one that bypasses Britain so we are not dependent on them. :)

ye might as well. actually lets say somehow you built a bridge linking ireland and brest and had the fastest trains known to man how long would it take to get down there.

yeh they have a site and all

good thing the celtic kitty died a painful death, could have been so much worse if the culling was delayed a few more years

:D yeh why travel to North to do the shopping when you can take the Tunnel to the UK Massif itself

according to Google Earth ruler its just under 500KM from Cork to Brest almost in a straight line close to Isle of Sciliy, so thats about 2 hours on the TGV whic has average speed of 250 KM/h

btw the Channel Tunnel at 50 KM length cost about 5 billion euro

so for price of NAMA we could theoretically tunnel all the way to France

also according to same Google Earth the depth between the 2 points doesn't go deeper than 350 feet (120 or so meters), hmmm

Well lets begin. Do it slowly but surely. By 2050 Ireland would be properly joined with the continent. somehow get the population to increase to british levels, making the project economically viable or more so.

anyone remember that episode of the Simpsons when Homer Taxpayer hands Fidel Castro Banks a 1 Trillion $ bill ... and then asks for it back :)

Little sense in this thread, common or otherwise.

With all due respect to both After Hours and The Cuckoo's Nest, this isn't either. Not for here.
