    I blame America for spreading this 'Twenty-x' crap. It's 'Two-thousand and x'.

I also blame the movie 2012 - it got people saying 'Twenty-Twelve'.

Sure back in the early 20th century they used to say 'Nineteen-hundred and twelve' etc, not 'Nineteen-twelve' as we'd say.

Face it, people are going to say the shortest one. Twenty ten it is. How is that even bad actually?

    I don't agree .. ;)

People could have said Twenty 05, Twenty 09 etc etc

But instead they said Two thousand and 5, Two Thousand and 9 etc

And now that we are used to saying Two Thousand at the start of year in this century, I feel that we will not stop.

And I put it to you, on this secind last day of the year two thousand and nine .. etc etc :D

Has anyone else noticed that when someone says IBTL .. it is almost a guarantee that the thread won't be locked.

Everyone that says IBTL on a thread and it is not locked after 20 more posts should .. ehh .. get spanked or something :)
    Awaits spanking.

*heads off to type IBTL in every other thread.

And they also said that Titanic was unsinkable...

In my head, saying "twenty oh nine" is like saying 3 numbers (20, 0, and 9), whereas saying "two thousand and nine" is like saying two (2000, and 9). It's easier, in my mind, to say two numbers than three. I consider the "noughties" to be a blip in an otherwise aesthetically pleasing system: breaking the year into two parts (19-99, 20-10, etc) and saying it as two two-digit numbers.

    well... 1910 was called 19-10
not one thousand nine hundred and ten

    so one assumes 2010 = 20-10?

    Twenty-tens: continuing where Nineteen-ninety-nine left off. :)

I have to ask though: why call this past decade "the naughties"? It just sounds like a bad, bad pun. I refuse to follow the flock on that one.

I'd say it did start off as a bad pun. Unfortunately, once people realised that the "two-thousands" had multiple meanings, and with the tennies (*cringe*) looming, we were left with no other choice!

... Nobody went round saying TWENTY ZERO NINE (2009), it was TWO THOUSAND AND NINE

Erm.. I did. Well, not 'zero nine' but 'oh nine' i.e. twenty oh nine, just like we would all say nineteen oh nine for 1909. And I said twenty hundred for 2000. Admittedly I was in a minority, but I've stuck with the correct convention for the past ten years. Glad the world is now joining me. :p

Technically speaking you are correct. But if we are being technical this current decade, the noughties doesn't end til this day next yr, so maybe we should postpone the thread until then. Until I hear a better word I'm still a Teenies man!

0-9 is a decade - next one starts with 10.

Leaving technicalities aside just a little worried about the "Teenies" term - too many connotations...........

    Dixies?

Could go with the "Tenties" either......

    What about "oneties"

Following on from your point above again;- if the last decade was the "Noughties" because the tens of years started with a "Zero" - i.e. 00 - 09 - then that decade is now over and a new one where the tens of years starts with a "One" has begun - 10-19....

So how will it be named...
    Dixies,
    Decies,
    Tenties,
    Oneties,
    Recoveries?
    ..................................??????
