Helo folks, went to see Avatar in Liffey valley yesterday evening (3D version)
Brought Mrs Gucky out with me for a nice relaxing evening.

Here is what it cost me:

2 x adults for the 3D movie (charged extra as its in 3D) €29
    1 x Combo for 2, this included 2 x large diet coke/water 1 x popcorn €9.90
1 x tiny and I mean tiny bag of pick and mix €6.88

    Grand total of €45.78

So a night in the pub versus a couple of hours in the cinema has suddenly become on par price wise!

im not sure how you paid 14.50 a go to see Avatar 3D. I was at the same cinema over the weekend and paid around 12.50 a ticket and grabbed some food from boots. Total cost for both of us was well under 30.

So you paid 25 euro for tickets, and spent a 5 in boots.

What part of the OP's post and calculations are you unable to fathom?

    Er, maybe your special Smoggy.
I ACTUALLY paid 29.70 made up of 2 x 14.60 plus 50c booking fee (visa)

Only see 12.50 as Student VIP 3D.......

He probally had to pay for the 3D Glasses too..

The cinema is a rip off...You'd be better going to xtravision and renting a dvd as they usually have specials on..The cinema is a rip off merchant..

No 3d specs were given out as you entred the cinema, we did pay for VIP seats but in fairness they were only 1.50 more BUT VIP seats my rear side! Same seats just up the front of the auditorium, which is ironic cos when I buy non "VIP" seats I always head for the back row! Lesson learnt though, no more rippin off mr gucky, we should start a campaign folks!

    Two facts:
The cinema gets a very small percentage of the money of the ticket. The rest goes to the people who they rented the reels from.
The cinema gets all it's money from the food it sells.

    =-=

Even though there is a Boots, and 3 restaurants next to it, people will still buy the food at the cinema. Me, I usually get a burger & cheesy chips in Eddie rockets, and then a bottle of water from Boots. Maybe some Ben & Jerrys icecream in the cinema, but I do love that stuff, and it helps settle the stomach after my feed @ Eddie Rockets.

People have been caught shagging during PG films, so not much would surprise me.

A good friend of mine works in VUE. You know those massive bags of popcorn that they empty into the counter - then sell it per box for a tenner? those massive industrial bags cost VUE €1.

One shaggin Euro!!! the mark up on cinema food is absolute robbery.

Believe it or not, but the profit from the food pays the salery of the people, the electricity, etc. Heck, it even pays for the repairs of the chairs.

Vue is the best cinema in Ireland / Dublin ( i have been to all in Dublin and one in Ballina ...LOL at that it was someones fcuking sitting room)

Tis expensive tbh but best screens and best seats hence i only go for certain movies. Tuesday afternoon is the best time to go. get a whole cinema to yourself.

    i save up and stuff.

3D tickets are 6 pounds in Aberdeen. 15 Euro is a rip off.

This is not news though. Handily the cinemas these days are usually in the vicinty of a Dunnes or Superquinn.

if u buy cinema tickets there, there is a deal in gourmet burger that u get a reg burger and chips for a fiver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,341 ✭✭✭✭jimmycrackcorm

I Have to buy the popcorn I vue because of my kid - it's part of the experience. However what drives me mad is how slow the staff are at serving. There is no sense of efficiency at all.

Have to agree with you there the staff there are incredibly slow which i wouldn't mind too much if its a quiet evening but on really busy night with big que they still just go at their same slow pace. what they should do is open up more ticket desks on busier nights rather than people buyin tickets as well as food it might help.

having worked here myself i have to agree... mostly students working there, slow, fat and mostly spend their time having a chat. I'm not being racist in any way here but they people who work there who are not irish know quite well what they are doing ! they pretend to be confused so they dont have to work fast, yes i know cos they told me !!!!

well i agree there with the slow staff myself again. but on busy nights would you not rather people buy their food and tickets at the same time rather than queue twice ?

but if your just buying tickets with no food then yeah i agree.

wow, the price actually went down from €11.50

also to save you some money there, two medium drinks are 500mls each BUT a large Drink is 1L (exact same)

so basically whats happening is when you get a combo for two your getting the exact same stuff but it costs more for an extra cup basically

just get the large combo and save yourself a bit of money (this was really effective when the large combo was €9.50 (might still be that) and the other was €11.50)

the seats are the same seats from ster century.... and that's going back quite a bit. infact most fittings there in the building still have ster century logo's on them.

Yeah i here you... caught people having a "ramble" from time to time and one of the other lads found a used condom while cleaning up afterwards.

actually, you should've being around when Zach and miri make a porno was on !!!

Dont forget people that these bags are also lying out back in a big room where they sit for months before you even see them. already popped before they even get to the cinema !

another point on a reason for how crap the staff are.

most of them are new and are sacked before they even get to grips with the place !, bearly anybody lasts long in there,

also they are very badly trained unless your the only person starting out and someone is there with you helping you for the day, which i only saw happen once !

Liffey Valley (Vue) Is the best cinema in Dublin. Most comfy seats and best Screens and sound in them all. Dundrum you are likely to get a small crappy screen where you can hear the next screens sound more than your own.

Cinema food is always expensive but as it's where they make all their money and it's easily avoided by bringing your own it's not worth complaining about.

Have to say though on a busy night with EVERY till open you have to queue for a half hour for food (buy tickets online) completely rediculous and I don't blame the staff I blame management. You wouldn't get away with this is any other retail type job. Pure slow lazy staff, badly trained (if at all). If I was 18 or so and could get away with not working hard of course I would. You never see a manager in that place.

Vue have a "KIDS CLUB" every Sat and Sun morning.
They show movies that have not long been out of the cinema and the ticket price is €2.50 and sometimes adults are free ;)
If bringing the kids to the cinema it's lways the kids club - doesn't bother them and costs little or nothing

I take it you haven't been to cineworld in town? probably the best cinema in dublin. I used to go to liffey valley but got sick of sticky floors, varying sound quality and dodgy seats.

In cineworld, There is a greater selection of food, you can get a drink before hand in the bar, the place is constantly being cleaned, not just the screens after a film. They also offer an unlimited card allowing you to see as many films as you want for a fixed fee, which works out alot better for regular cinema goers.
