Jesus guys, I blocked boards from my computer a few months back, I come on now through a proxy and I recognise no-one! But to all the new enthusiasts, howdy, I\'m very pleased to meet you all :)

Anyhoo, well I think I\'m gonna do my CAO today. I have tried a few times but literally seen my choices on the page, got scared of the future, bottled it and x\'d out of the browser... And I want to med!

But yes, back on topic here.

Em, anyone really struggling with the location of where they want to study? Because I am, badly.

    At the mo, I\'m thinking:

    1. Med TCD
    2. Med UCD
    3. Med UCG
    4. Med RCSI
    5. Med UCC
6-10 Anything from maths and ecomonics to science, to English and Philosophy.

My dilemma though. I live in Dublin, on the Northside (respect) and I\'m at my wits end deciding between Trinity and UCD. It\'s really coming down to things outside the medical teaching because an MB BCh BAO is the same from all the unis.

Pros for Trinners: Nearer and easier to get to, 5 years, apparently more respected (never thought that came into medical education though? I always thought a doctor is a doctor at the end of the day?), The Phil
Cons for Trinners: I depise town, sporting facilities are meh, I really didn\'t like the way the lecturer at the open day presented Trinity students (kinda clueless and prestige-chasing, but I know that shouldn\'t really infuence my decision)

Pros for UCD: The teaching hospitals (especially the Mater), New Health Sci building is rad, sporting facilities, the open day gave me the impression that the lecturers were far more organised and focused, seemed to be a really good atmosphere amongst students
Cons for UCD: Trek out (I\'d probbers have to move out... don\'t have the moolah), depressing architecture, 6 years, I could see myself feeling anonymous

So, basically I\'m a wee bit concerned. I mean, it\'s at least 5 years of my life, so I want to enjoy the challenge.

Oh and peeps going for med, look into back up courses in 5th year if you can. I didn\'t (because I knew I wanted med) and I regret it greatly. I have zero clue what to put down as a back up.

I'm applying for med too. You should think about RCSI, if you have Chem and a 2nd science then it's straight into 5 years. I don't have Chem but I still really liked the college so I'm putting it 2nd.

For back up options have you had a look at Human Health & Disease in TCD and Biomedical, Health and Life Sciences in UCD? They're designed really for people who don't get med, very good courses to get you into research or any science based job, or to do grad med after.

Yeah, I do all three sciences so I could go straight into Surgeons\\\' 5-year course, but tbh, I preferred UCD and Trinity. And Galway for that matter. Galway is amazing and I have relatives down there so my accommodation\\\'s sorted, but I\\\'d like to stay at home if I could :)

The reason I\\\'m so reluctant to put down BHLS and HHD is because I don\\\'t want to work in a lab for the rest of my life (probably a bit of hyperbole, but hey). The reason I want to med, as opposed to biomedsci, is that ultimately, as a doctor you are using science to improve the patient, not using the patient to improve science. (I know for post-grad research work this might not hold true, but I think it applies for the everyday work of a doctor)

If I don\\\'t get in through the LC, I\\\'ll probably go for grad med. But I think it would be beneficial to have as broad experiences as possible before going in.

I\\\'m sorry if I\\\'m being incoherent. My mind is a bit scrambled. :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 134 ✭✭aimerlans

dont do nursing if youre squemish, no way, its not a glamorous job in any way like some people believe.
like another poster said maybe arts

You can go into ALOT of things after an arts course, it opens up alot, not just teaching. But like if you don't know what exactly you want, it could be a good idea. Like even now just goto UCC or UCD and look up the Arts course. You pick 4 subjects and then go from there. It's kinda demanding but it opens up a lot of doors.

midwifery maybe. youre for the most part dealing with healthy women so not so many yucky things to look at :)

i'm so sqeemish though. any time i'm in a hospital enviornment i'm on the floor! :(

i don't think id be able to pick four subjects to study though. i'm not interested in anything and i'm really not a boring person like, i'm just finding deciding so difficult.

oh ok, then maybe not!! what about social care in dit, was one of the things i thought about, thought it might be intersting

  • Registered Users Posts: 134 ✭✭aimerlans

    its an option i guess..
what's that college like? never even considered it an option.?

  • Registered Users Posts: 744 ✭✭✭leesmom

maybe dental hygiene in tcd? or dental nursing, not quite hospital setting as such

  • Registered Users Posts: 134 ✭✭aimerlans

ooh no.. don't think id like peoples mouths lol..

really need to go to a guidance counsellor!

You've still months to decide, as long as you're not interested in any restricted courses. Just put some things you're somewhat interested down for now and you can change it in May-July.

Almost anywhere really ... to quote an old Prof. of mine: "The Bachelor of Arts degree prepares you for nothing ... and for everything!" :D

While slightly cynical, there's truth in it ... a good Arts / Humanities course encourages you to learn to think for yourself; teaches you analytical and research skills; teaches you to present information and the opinions which you have formed based on it in a clear and structured manner ...

I suppose one of my personal grumbles is that students have become so used to being spoonfed for LC in the race for those magical points that they rebel in college against being asked to think for themselves, thus subverting the purpose of studying arts in the first place!

Some colleges / departments still stubbornly hold the line though ... ask around! ;)

Arts graduates end up everywhere ... from the civil service to education to the community sector to banks to business ... it depends to an extent on what subjects you study, but the generic skills are probably what's most important. Many will go on to do a specialist postgrad course first however ... but that's nearly a given these days anyway.

A fair few of the IoTs offer Social Care or similar courses I think.

    1. CK404 Environmental and Earth System Sciences
    2. DN038 Climate and Earth System Science
    3. DN008 Science
    4. GY314 Earth and Ocean Sciences
    5. GY301 Science
    6. TL400 Wildlife Biology

Thats what i've got so far, no thanks to the guidance councillor

I'm happy so far with these, but at the start of the year i was split in half between the area of ecology, enviro science etc. and the area of art.
So i ruled out art. Wasn't an easy decision as i love both of these.

The way i see it, if i did art and i didn't like it and i wanted to do science, i would probably have to repeat the LC, unless you could do a conversion course.
I honestly am not 100% sure if it's the right choice, but shur what's the worst that could happen?:pac:

    Did you ever consider dentistry?
I'm a first year dent and I absolutely love it!
I was madly in love with the idea of being a doctor all throughout secondary school, did well in the hpat and all (With a combined score of 746 i could have done medicine in any college in the country) but after talking to a few unhappy doctors, I realised I wanted a life too.

    Best decision i ever made.

    Don't go into medicine blind!
The hard work only really begins AFTER you leave college. With dentistry, you have your degree after five years and don't need any extra study. It's well paid, rewarding, plenty of patient interaction ( unlike med, you generally don't give the patient bad news) and a nine-to-five day.

    Just my two cents!
Best of luck whatever you choose, mate.
