Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,
I'm looking to purchase a new external hard drive to use to backup my laptop, as the one I bought in Lidl a while back packed up on me with the lost of a lot of data. I was in Easons today and saw that they have a dane Elec 1.5TB external hard rive for around 100 euro.
My question is that I have never seen nor heard of this brand before and was wondering if anyone cna tell me anything about them, good bad or indifferent ?, do they make good quality stuff? or should I stick with the likes of Western Digital drives as they have a very good name.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hey, just wondering if you bought the Dane Elec Media drive... I seen one in Reads and was thinking of buying but am a bit wary of an unknown manufacturer as I have lost data before on external drives..

That media drive is a cracker for the price. Easy to use, great pic quality. & HDMI if you want it.
IIRC Dane Elec only manufacture the casing. The HDD is one of the usual suspects (WD, Seagate, Samsung etc). I don't recall which, and amn't curious enough to get off me a*** to find out. :)

It may be worth your while checking if it's just the enclosure that failed on your old drive. You can buy enclosures pretty cheap on eBay, but find out if it's an IDE or SATA disk inside first!

You'll have to take the enclosure apart to check whether the drive inside is SATA or IDE. See wikipedia for pics of the two types of connector/interface if you're not sure. If you want to go down this road at all .... The IDE disks have 2 separate plugs, one with 4 pins (power) and a ribbon cable for data. A modern disk will prob be SATA.

here is an example of a cheap SATA enclosure.

It depends how valuable your data was ....
