My name is Stephen Gillman and I am a fourth year culinary arts student in DIT, I am doing a thesis on "How Allotments and Small Farms can save the Environment and Economy". This is a quick questionnaire (10questions) that I am using to find out more about the opinions of people growing in allotments that I could use to compare or contrast current literature that I have studied. I would be happy to answer any questions. People who grow their own food are welcome to take the questionnaire as well. Thanks for your time, it’s much appreciated

    Hi Stephen

I'm not sure how effective economically speaking allotments might be at reducing costs or indeed saving the environment? Many of the people I know who are engaged in allotments do so not to reduce costs or protect the environment but rather to practice a hobby which provides much stimulating interest with obvious benefits of any enjoyable hobby/past time(self sufficency, achievement, supplementary produce etc etc).

As a means of production it is difficult to imagine, how the variable sof allotment culture can be harnessed as an effective and consistent means of economic production. I think allotment is micro based and will always be such. Any extensive expansion of allotment would not only be inefficient in costs of supply and demand, but also costs and perhaps greater damage to the environment.

Gov support rarely makes any significant impact but rather might the process more cumbersome and bureaucratic .

I would encourage more small (specialist) farms but at what price? Recent scientific surveys failed to identify any significant nutrional differences between organic and normal farm produce crops? Also importing organic from huge distances is at best flawed and at worse IMO contradictorary of basic organic growing ethos etc.

Good luck with your research and yes if we can make more refinements/improvements, it will be well worthwhile.
