is there a program similar to start up inspector which works on laptops that will let you know what applications and features are runing on your smartphone so they can be disabled to save battery life

Always wanted to find this out myself as well. Would be very handy and useful if there was such a program/app.

What kind of phone you have would be helpful for a starter?

For symbian Y-Tasks can show you running processes, if not necessarily startup programs
