I wasn't nervous about labour, I was dreading having to have a c-section, but was induced in the end. I went through 2 tanks of gas and air, and spent my entire dilation time pretty much blacked out :) The rest of it just wasn't that painful. I think the only thing that would MAKE it painful is if you're tense or afraid about it. Vaginas are designed to have babies come out of them, no matter what you usually use them for :)

The only piece of advice ican give you about labour is to remember it's only going to be a few hours, yes it'll hurt but that's why they have pain relief and when you hold your baby at the end you really do forget all about it (until you get pregnant again and it all comes back to you :D)
You're being told other peoples stories and you can't judge the level of pain for yourself.. you have nothing to measure it against. Stay calm, relax and know that you will cope and if you don't who's going to say anything to you:D
Don't build it up in you head.. the baby has to come out and your body knows what to do ;)

freudiangirl, I know how you feel, I'm not afraid of labour as such but I'd say I'm more concerned. I was induced and sectioned on my first so I feel like a first-timer this time. Anyhow I found a great website last night that kind of gives you a plan of action for early labour. My thinking is, once you get passed the early parts of labour, you'll be well tuned in to the rest of it.

anyhow here's the link (hope it's okay to post links?) It's worth a read, the people who have been there before will probably scoff at it, but I think it's settling to at least have a plan? :D

Had a read of it and I certainly wouldn't scoff at it. There is brilliant advice there. ;)

Dunno what it is I'm very scared of my appointment this week. Worried they're going to keep me in because I've slipped discs in my back and I'm beginning to have nerve impingement symptoms. Pain I can deal with, numbness on the other hand isn't a good sign.

Well make up for it with loads of sleep tonight I hope.
Got a growth scan today, didn't even have to request it. Baby measuring 32 weeks, I'm 34 weeks so while small it's within acceptable ranges so everyone's happy. Didn't get kept, instead got told to contact my neuro specialist ASAP so I'm waiting for them to get back to me. I'll sleep well tonight though!

So off to the clinic today to find out if they'll leave me 14 days or 12

Had another visit to the diabetes clinic today. Only 2 and a half hours sitting waiting this time, so yay? (so glad now i spent 2 and a half grand to go private) Diabetes is all under control, doc is now happy. I am relieved...

    But....

Baby is measuring too SMALL now, so I have to have an extra scan just to make sure, which means another half days leave for hubby gone down the toilet. And another afternoon of our time spent driving.

My obstetrician also decided to inform me today that I'd spend the next 12 weeks injecting HEPARIN daily into my STOMACH. Its like a 9 inch nail (disclaimer: possible slight exaggeration there, but it's definitely twice the size of the insulin needle), and i'm supposed to inject it into where the BABY LIVES, seriously? Gak, am unimpressed.

It's just one thing after another, and I'm starting to lose patience... I can't even turn to my old and treasured friend (Mr Haagen Dazs) for comfort in these trying times.

    Foxinsocks- why the heparin??
Hope all ok with you and the baba - how many weeks are you now?

Last time I was pregnant, I ate a bag of ice from Tesco every 2 days. I dont know how I still have teeth. the last bag of ice I had was one my partner smuggled into hospital after the baby was born. The nothing. 22 weeks now and haven even had a thought of ice! Why does chewing ice feel so good?

  • Registered Users Posts: 326 ✭✭foxinsocks

The heparin is because my obstetrician is worried about clots. There's no one specific reason. She asked me about a family history, but amazingly, clotting is one of the few things there is no family history of. My other stated risk factors are:

-I'm 38 years old (38 suddenly feels a lot older than it did yesterday).
-I'm on insulin for gestational diabetes.
-I'm on meds for high blood pressure.
-My BMI is too high (although according to her calculations, I've lost the equivalent of 20 pounds since getting pregnant, thanks to the diabetes diet, so at least it's not as bad as it was)

If on my next visit, my obstetrician suggests the anti clotting stockings, I may have to hurt her... It's bad enough I have to sleep wearing the thumb/wrist splint to stop the tendonitis waking me up 10 times a night because I've moved my hand... I'm starting to suspect she's adding more treatment because she wants me as miserable as possible so I don't object too strenuously to being dragged in early for a managed birth.

Thing is the baby is fine, I know she/he is fine, because she spends all day and night doing a new martial art, which seems to be a combination of yoga, tai chi, and ultimate cage fighting. She's measuring just under 32 weeks, instead of the 34+2 she's supposed to be, but she has to be pure muscle at this point! Under any other circumstances I would be thrilled to be having a slightly smaller baby :)

What?! If you've no family history or other risk factors why is she putting you on anti blood clotting meds?

I think they're gonna have to review the gest diab...my baby is small too...well they say its fine but its smaller than my son was at this stage.

    +1 re those awful stockings

re: the small babies - I am starting to suspect a trend here - I was told last week that baby was a bit too small - but this week, it's within the range again. Maybe there's something funny going on in terms of growth spurts or somethign? Cause for some reason, you hear it a lot that babies measure small around 32 weeks, and then are fine again...Just a suspicion. ;-)

I think we're having a little squirmer, or maybe a pretty twirly ballerina. The amount of rotations (or what feels like pirouettes) is amazing, and just a little bit ick (the feeling, that is)...

Other than that - my back is killing me. and this supposed 'summer' we're having is beyond a joke at this stage. It's been bucketing all day ;-(

I know, it's mad isn't it? on my last pregnancy I LOVED eating ice but this time around it just hits me every now and again. (although I did go through god-knows-how-many Loop the Loops in the early stages of this pregnancy!!)

I have the other 4 risk factors I listed, age, weight, insulin and high BP, the family history is the only one i don't have. I swear she's trying to put me off having more babies! Well she needn't bother, the only way I'll be having more is if someone drops 'em off at the door!

Edit: Update, have done today's injection... I would just like to say '****in OW!'

Have you tried videoing your tummy as the baby moves? Play it back and it will freak you out :D

I think all our 'specialists' are drama queens trying to create issues where there are none ;)

Yeah, but the problem is, if you don't do what they tell you, and something goes wrong, then how would you feel? Stupid doctors!

On another note, I don't think I've ever wanted an enema more badly than I do right now... In fact, I don't think I've ever wanted an enema at all, ever before...

I have a stinking cold...well I'm not sure if it's a cold or pregnancy sinuses kicking off like in the early days.

Plus we were told yesterday that my mum has cancer so it's knocked the wind out of my pregnancy sales a little bit. She'll know over the next few weeks how serious it is so fingers crossed it's curable.

No real moans today except that i'm overdue but even that's not getting to me too much.. looking forward to a nice spicy pizza (sans cheese) tonight and the fires lit and i'm about to head off for a nice bath cos my back is sore after 7 hours standing  :D funnily i'm not as tired as i would be if i was home all day running after ben . . he has a lot more energy than me...

Actually, I just remembered, there was an ice machine between the two delivery wards in WRH, we spotted it at the anti-natal visits. Thats where i got it during the labour. Cant beat chewing on ice while in pain.

On the ward afterwards he much have gone back over to the delivery place to get some ice. We really were treated really well..

You're a legend Cbyrd...I'm finishing up in 2 weeks and counting down the days...mind you the lad will still be in creche 3 days a week, so I should have those days to myself. I expect I'll miss the little blighter though and end up keeping him home with me :D
