My point was try to ignore the things that piss you off and be grateful you had a good night, cos we've all prob had plenty of **** nights! But if you don't have a good night come in and tell us why!

The music can always be better!

I did have a good night and Whelan's doesn't mean as much to me as it used to when I started this thread, so I'm not really pi$$ed off at the place anymore. Since I hadn't been there in so long, I was very interested to hear what the music was like, and it seemed natural to post about it.

I have spoken to the DJ a couple of times before and I am wasting my time doing so. Even on this thread it's about a 50/50 split so it's not as if everyone thinks I'm right about what I view as turn in the wrong direction (musically) for Whelan's.

Yeah, it's very lively there and a great atmosphere. Thank you, Mícheal Martin for making everyone smoke and socialise outdoors.

Is this Whelan's still a good place to go in Dublin? Where is good for a fun night out in this area?

I've been wondering this too about Whelans?

Not been in about 3 years, was quality any time I went and always easy to pull - might not have the same appeal now I'm spoken for though

Loved going there on a saturday night pissed up and chasing skirt

Whelan's is very quiet these days, usually seems to be small groups of people in for a few pints without going mad.

I was in Workmans on Saturday for the first time and thought it was really good. The music was great downstairs, Tunnels by Arcade Fire, Debaser by Pixies, there was some White Stripes, TV on the Radio etc etc

Clubbing wise Whelans is a horrible place at the moment, just a playlist going on all night, no visible dj, bland songs selections and a crowd completely up to anything. There's no real dancing and a general dull vibe. Crazy that what's supposed to be the main indie rock place in Dublin doesn't try harder

Is Doyle's still any good these days? Haven't been in a while but used to be a good mix (and free in!)

    The workmans
    Grand Social

Anyone been to the Pop Inn yet? Not sure if it has a proper club with DJs or just live music.

It's the new HQ of Dublin-based collective/record label Popical Island. Haven't managed to check out the spot yet but hopefully I'll get myself over there in a bit. Popical Island have put out some excellent releases and the musicians involved are quite prolific so I'm sure they'll be hosting another gig there soon.

Where is the venue itself though?
