Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi guys.
I got a new cooler for my pc and I have read on the internet that I need to clean the old paste off the processor.
What do I use to clean the old paste off?
Is methylated spirits ok to use?

    Thanks
    Jak/mar

Yeah, methylated spirits is fine, any alcohol or even nail polish remover (unscented) will do as it evaporates completely

    Thank you :D

Does it matter how concentrated it is?

Concentrated? How You mean? You can't water it down

I dont know if concentrated is the right word but I mean 100%,90%,80% ect.
    Does it really matter?

Do you even need a solvent? I just use a cloth or something to wipe it off, comes away easy and no risk of spillage/corosion/whatever.

Then its not clean, even as fingerprint can affect the transfer of heat. You need 2 clean surfaces

Good to know, I've only redone GPU's and havent had a problem, but with an OC'd CPU it'd be more important. You learn something new everyday:)

I've been running a CPU with zero thermal paste to the cooler for over a year without issue or any concerning temps. Not doing any over clocking mind you. The need for thermal paste in a regular system is exaggerated at best as most systems run well within their design limits, it's only those over clocking crowd who need to be concerned with such things.

I would agree though that cleaning off old paste is a good idea as it may prevent good contact and transfer of heat to the new cooler.

You're a timebomb waiting to go off Dorsanty. I hope the original poster does not take your advice and does use thermal paste. You could seriously cook your chip without it, thats why all CPUs/coolers come with it.

I got thermal paste and special solvent to remove the old paste off amazon but as you can see there are other alternatives. As regards the values of thermal paste - I had another thread on here about problems with my pc overheating - I put on fresh thermal paste and my cpu temp is back to around 45 degrees ( from 85 - 90 degrees). Its early days but to me this stuff seems like magic dust :D
