Just drove up from Waterville to Tralee, and the land down in south Kerry is drenched, lots of fields full of water and a fair few rivers getting pretty high. It has been very windy and heavy rain all day.
That said, a couple of miles out of Cahirciveen, rain turned increasingly to snow, and in and around Kells and Glenbeigh areas, it is like a blizzard. Very heavy driving snow, and the roads are getting slippery with all the compacted snow. I haven't seen as much snow falling in a long time.
Heading into Killorglin it got less heavy and was mostly sleety stuff with none sticking. Back in Tralee and it is raining lightly, bordering on sleet.

At the rate it is snowing though on the higher parts of the county, i reckon there will be very high accumulations, Conor pass road in Dingle is closed already i believe, and the Tralee road to Dingle is getting heavy snowfall as well

There may be hope for beyond the snow shield ;) (lol still not sure what that is but cannot find post where it was mentioned)

That thing  At 04:30 this morning that was showing large snowfall over the entirety of Wicklow and extending into South Dublin as far as the M50. Ha..

Ok back to weather - and it is bone dry in Cork....absolutely nothing to speak of really:rolleyes:

Wind Chill is nasty though. Not snow weather but I wouldn't like to be stuck out in it for many hours tonight without good weather gear.

well i was referring to his assessment last night at 925pm. i know its depressing. the chance of a significant snow event seems to have passed for now.:(

to be honest i wasn't expecting snow out of this, what will be really disappointing from my perspective is if, out of this next cold period, we don't get at least one widespread snowfall event at lower level before it's all over. with this in mind if the low that is progged to come up from the south early next week does not lead to heavy snowfall as it's meet the siberian air. i will feel like breaking something:p

Still spitting rain here, in a fresh easterly breeze, ground sodden after todays rain. Not a flake of snow to report, unless it came in with ninja-like stealth under cover of darkness, and left without a trace.....

most soccer fans know about myp2p at this stage. regarding the game villa are controlling the midfield and Agger and Carragher are there for the taking. Carragher is not the player he was last season.

    off topic, it's still raining:(

What I cannot understand is how it is snowing in Clare, Kerry and the West in General where it is usually milder than the East and the North. I mean who ever heard of snow in the plains of Kerry and Clare?? It was snowing in Dublin a few days ago but just light stuff. Well if it really has been sleeting/snowing down there then logic suggests that it will have to do so up here in the East. Currently 2 degrees in Castleknock, Dublin and has been for the past 6 hours. Still raining/sleeting but no snow. No snow in Johnnie Foxes either in Dublin mountains or in Laragh near Glendalough, Co. Wicklow. STRANGE!!!!!!

In an easterly setup (like we have now), the west always gets the coldest temps due to it being away from the windward coast. Unless of course, we get two months of easterlies and the sea freezes!

I think as far as this front is concerned its over, still raining outside and now feels very mild compared to recently, All we can hope for now is that the Irish sea produces the goods from Thursday onwards till Sunday and that the wind doesnt magically swing around to the north again just as its cold enough for snow.

Sundays event doesnt look entirely promising to me, looks almost like a repeat of what we have now with mild air coming half way up the country from the south untill its replaced by colder air once again.

At the risk of getting another bashing I think ME did well on forecasting today's weather. They always said snow on high ground and a risk of some on lower levels. Going on their official reports today that has been the case - and not one of the 19Z reports mentions sleet or snow.

Going on the posts here I think most people are licking their wounds and have had only sleety rain at most, as I said would be the case this time last night. It would be interesting to have the elevations of the snow reports on the map, as I expect most of them are above a few hundred feet (except Galway city of course!)

Make of this post what you will.

I think ME are so defensive and vague about these events that you will always be able to make a case to say they were right if you really want to unless theres two feet of snow on O'Connell Street.

Even still, I can't agree (nor will anyone else in the north west) that they called the last few days pre-Christmas correctly.

I think with the Boards vs Met E thing its a score draw

You can find wrongs and rights in both

The boards forecast was really for tomorrow and theres probably already been more snow than ME were forecasting yesterday evening for the whole band, so I'd say it's early days, still 0-0 with Boards having the better of the early exchanges.

to my surprise its very very wet snow here in SE Mayo. Just went to call the cats in and its 75/25% snow/rain. The surprise being the air temp has increased since this afternoon to 2.1c.

most soccer fans know about myp2p at this stage. regarding the game villa are controlling the midfield and Agger and Carragher are there for the taking. Carragher is not the player he was last season.

    off topic, it's still raining:(
True but theres always some that dont , Lets go Villa!
Dry here in donegal, its quite breezy , the clouds look suspicous, they look like they are full of snow.

Gonzo this won't be repeated. The next depression that tackles the much colder airmass after this will almost certainly be snow. We just narrowly missed out on this one. The air that is coming is colder then what we had up to now and it's going to hang around. A much better shot toward the end of the weekend/early next week for something significant. Of course snow to come on Thursday and Friday in the East and over the weekend so you will hardly miss out entirely.

    Patience.

Oh and remember with Ground temperatures so cold anything that does fall is likely to settle and, on the evidence atm, anything that settles will be around for quite some time to come!
