Remember that name. ;) 20 year old tough tackling midfielder from Cork City made his first Premier League start for Sunderland and did very well by all accounts.

Had a good game by all accounts.

He was another panic sell by the our club to pay current expenditure. :o

He didn't look out of place today at all.

A few crunching tackles early on to let the opposition know he wasn't going to be pushed around set the mark. He was creatively very good and had a few long range efforts that went close. He sometimes tried the difficult pass too often when a simple pass would have sufficied but that's to be expected as he was obviously trying to impress.

He's very good friends with another one of our youngsters, Jordan Henderson, who has really burst onto the scene this season and David looks like he'll get the chance to prove himself again after todays performances.

Us Sunderland fans are very impressed with what we saw today and if he doesn't pick up a knock during training this week, he's almost guaranteed a start V Barrow next weekend in the FA Cup.

    Well done David.

What did all ye Cork fans think of him when he was there? I never saw him play for city even I don't think. Seems surprising that he could so easily make such a big step up.

He's been at Sunderland for nearly 2 years now, it's not a sudden step up, he was playing in their u18s and reserves and training with the first team, this would have brought him on a lot. to be honest. if it wasn't for injuries he wouldn't be near the first team right now.

Not true at all and a very ill informed comment to make.

He was absolutely flying in pre-season and Bruce actually stated that he planned to give him a decent go this season along with Jordan Henderson, a few days later however, Meyler suffered an injury which was supposed to rule him out for 12 weeks, he then suffered a reaction to the injury in his first week back training, ever since he's been fit though he has been in almost every single first team squad regardless of what other players are fit at the time.

To say 'he wouldn't be near the first team' is basically a lie, how much nearer to the first team can one get by being in the first team squads and on the bench every week?

so if Cana and Cattermole were fit Meyler would have started?

    No chance!

That's not what you said though is it?

You said 'if it wasn't for injuries he wouldn't be near the first team right now'which is a lie as he's as close to the first team as one can get i.e. in first team squads and one of the substitutes.

It's obvious that he wouldn't have started if our first choice centre midfield were both avaliable, but to say 'if it wasn't for injuries he wouldn't be near the first team right now' is a downright lie.

Just a bump to let you all know that David has unfortunately suffered a reoccurance of the ligament damage which kept him out for 6 months on the same knee and will miss the rest of this season.

Hopefully he can fully recover but as this is the second time now things aren't looking good.

    Gutted :(

That's terrible news. The chap looks devastated:

He was ahead of his schedule in his comeback but maybe he needed more time? Bruce has blamed the Christmas schedule. I wish him a quick recovery. I hope the guy isn't going to have injuries plague his career as has happened with Steven Reid.

Aye, he came back in 6 months and his relatively quick recovery had astonished the medical team. He was fully fit like, but the ligament is just one of those nasty things that can always creep up again.

There was a joke going around the SAFC dressing room that Meyler had his own key to enter the training facilites as his team-mates said that he was constantly in there working on his recovery. He was putting in 12 hour shifts trying to get back on the training pitch.

It will be terrible for him and a real struggle trying to get the motivation to do all that again.

He's on Twitter if anyone's interested:

    :(

Not a feel good thread this early in the morning.

Hopefully he can somehow get fit and playing again.

A guy I know knows him, and when he did he cruciae first time he was told 6-12 months, Meylers automatic reaction was "Shít, I am out for 6 months"! It did not cross his mind he would be out any longer. He is a bloody minded fella who has a great attitude and great career ahead of him.

    Fingers crossed for the lad.

Terrible news, for himself Sunderland and Ireland,

I was really hoping he would be involved in the coming Irish squads, was delighted when he came back to fitness,

Hopefully he can get the head down and come out the other end fighting fit again.

Was gutted when i seen him taken off during the game, very sad news, hopefully trap or someone will give him a call to wish him well in his recovery, it would mean a lot to the lad. At least he is only 20 and still has a good few years ahead of him. Hopefully as said he does not turn out like Steven Reid and keep getting injuries. Meyler and Cunningham pick up 2 bad injuries in the space of a week, not good :(

Some positive news about David Meyler. They are saying the ligaments are still intact which means its not as bad as first feared.

Aye, I seen that earlier. That's absolutely excellent news but we're going to have to be very cautious with him from now on.

    :D

Yeah very good news. Was thrilled to read this earlier. Hopefully they will be a little more cautious with him this time and ease him in more gently when he returns.
