Wireless Modem Router - Always Connected?

I have installed a new Netgear wireless modem router for ASDL, it's the first time I've dealt with one of these and I'd like to know if they are meant to stay connected all the time? If not, how do you disconnect?

I'd also like to know whether there is an easier way of seeing whether you are connected or not. There is an icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen but it doesn't flicker like my old connection did.

I'm on a pc running Windows 7. Steep learning curve with both! :D

    Thanks! :)

Disconnect what from what? The computer from the modem, or the modem from the Internet? Either way, the answer is switch it off. Is there a reason you want to disconnect though?
