Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well first of all I would like to appolagize if this is already a topic. What is your opinion of the guy who was executed in China yesterday? To be honest,I did feel very sorry for the guy at first but then I learned about his history, the guy has being breaking the law for years.Am I the only one who feels that this guy may have gotten what he deserved. Before anyone starts,I am very sympatethic to people with mental illnesses but that has to end at a certain level.

    Assasinated?

He was executed by lethal injection for dealing heroin in an area with a big heroin problem. It would have been better if he was deported to the UK to hold trial there though.
You make it sound as if he's an innocent man the chinese government decided to kill for no reason whatsoever.

haha should have expected this,it is after hours.OK he was executed. What is your opinion of this situation?

  • Registered Users Posts: 68 ✭✭tooler08

I think that if he was so badly mentaly ill he should have not been alowed to be on his own in China

    Probably.
From what I could see of the court case there were loads of chinks in his defence.

I don't agree with the death penalty whatsoever.. but I do think they were right not to undermine their own laws just because of outside pressure

    I just feel that:
1)it appears that he treated his children very badly
    2)he drank drove
    3)he abused everyone
and then he smuggled heroin into somewhere where heroin is already a big problem. If you add up all of these factors,I think that he didn't seem to be a very nice guy.

Heroin is a pretty destructive drug, I'd say its the most destructive even. The death penalty is far too harsh though, he should have either gotten a long prison sentence or he should have been deported to the UK for a trial there. In any case from what we know, he didn't have any interpreter at his trial or any type of idea about what was going on in his case. That alone is pretty unjust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,033 ✭✭✭✭bnt

One sign that the guy was "not all there": smuggling 4kg of pure Heroin in to a country that executes drug smugglers.

We can argue about what is "appropriate", but it's not as if China (Singapore, Thailand etc.) care. What is one apparent criminal's life to a country of over a billion? It's over, now: the firing squad has closed his file permanently.

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

Smuggle heroin into a country notorious for harsh dealings with such crimes. Get caught. Executed. Tough ****. No sympathy. Harsh but true. Maybe if our pansy assed judical system had a similar approach so many innocent people wouldn't get shafted everyday of the year. (By which i mean families of murder victims seeing the accused get a suspended sentence despite 50 previous convictions for example) **** him i say. Maybe he had mental problems, maybe he didn't. I don't care. i'm sick to **** of people getting lenient sentences because of bull**** mitigating circumstances. "oh I'm a reformed drug user from a broken home" **** right off.

Nobody should be killed with a death penalty. Shove him in a jail instead but don't kill him.

Kill all drug smugglers? So presumably kill all murderers aswell? Rapists? Burglers? Where would you draw the line out of interest?

The line should be drawn thus: If you deal in drugs, you DO deserve to die. If you smuggle drugs, you DO deserve to die. If you are a peadofile, you DO deserve to die. If you use drugs, you deserve LIFE in prison. If you are a sex offender of adults, you deserve LIFE in prison. If you are a murderer, you deserve LIFE in prison. If you have three convictions, you deserve LIFE in prison.

For anything else, it would depend. Stealing, drink-driving, fighting, fraud etc. all deserve a conviction. First one, 1 year in prison. Second, 3 years. Third, 5 years. Fourth, the rest of your natural life. Saying that, you could do something that would warrant a 20 year spell behind bars on your first conviction. I would add a few new crimes too, such as ripping off a country. Mental assesments AND IQ tests would be mandatory for everybody every year, just like an NCT. That would sort that arguement out.

I do feel sorry for the fella though. The chinese are not known for their fairness. I believe he was away with the fairies.

I wish I could work the multi quote thing but I haven't figured it out yet, alas:

    1. So someone selling a gram of cannabis to a friend deserves the death penalty?
    2. Someone taking a drag off a joint at the age of 18 should rot in jail till they die?
    3. Someone punches someone on thier 18th birthday. Then gets angry and throws a stone at a car that nearly ran them over when they are 21. Then steals a bottle of water from a shop on a dare when they are drunk one night when they are 23. So that's it, their life is over, bang them up, throw away the key?
    4. Thought it was 3 and then life? Or was your high horse of righteuos indignation going so fast that you forgot what you typed a moment before?
5.Ehhhh........wait, so the cops knew internal affairs were setting them up!????!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭mrsdewinter

It seems clear that this man was mentally ill, and was not in a position to defend himself at trial (I'm assuming here that he had a fair trial). Even lowlife fantasists deserve protection.
