Cold Spell Discussion [Snow showers hitting east from 4pm] ( New Years Eve 2009 )

Therer is some attempt at cloud build up in the west of the irish sea-interesting.

Meanwhile I haven't had time much to look at the gfs 12z but if sundays chart verified with the -10 850 air over the sea and Ireland in an NE flow,you'd have lots of snow showers packing in on sunday evening again to the East.

Going by the 5 station temp means of Casememt, Oak Park, Claremorris, Mullingar and Shannon, December 09 finished at 3.0c, which is -2.3c below the combined 61-90 average of 5.3c for the same stations.

For most of the year, the yearly mean for the above stations ran somewhere between 0.6c and 0.8c above normal, but the cool spell at the end of December was potent enough to bring the finishing figure down to 9.7c, which equates to +0.4c above the finishing 61-90 yearly mean.

this time yesterday we were expecting this cold spell to end around Thursday of next week. things have changed alot since, next wednesday and thursday is looking viciously cold especially in the east with a north-east wind from Sweden.
