    NCT? Ring and ask.

First of all, Micra is a good choice for a first car but also look at Punto, Fiesta etc.
    Must have power steering.
Must have long NCT, pref 2011.
Always look at 2-3 cars before making your mind up.
Bring someone who know a bit about cars, to check the engine, tyres, rust, ...

    Maybe

i would also consider a Colt as a good first car.... go and test drive a few Micras since that's what you seem to be keen on, but also try Fiestas, Colts, Puntos..... just find a car that feels right, and as said above, have someone who knows what they're doing with you.

    suggestion...

Do you need it to be certain engine size for insurance purposes? i.e. the micra is a 1L engine - very small. The colt above is a 1.3L. This means it should be a bit faster and zippier. It is generalisation but the higher the engine, the higher the insurance
Would be easier to comment I think if we knew is it for 1 person, how much have you to spend. Are you looking to hold onto it for a year or so...how basic is your knowledge of cars?

    Thanks for the replies.
I'm 21 and female i dont really want anything bigger than a 1.2 for insurance reasons.
The car is just for me i've got about €3,000(people keep telling me this is to much to be spending on my 1st car) I'd like to hold onto it for a few years and my knowledge of cars is very very basic oh and I dont know anyone who does know anything about them.

Here's a later model Micra 03 for 3200 long NCT too

newer models tend to be safer when it comes to any car

Id go for a yaris personally over any of the cars mentioned above. they will not give you an ounce of trouble.
Steer clear of the puntos would be my advice.
The colts are nice too but tend to be a bit pricier
The micras are grand but really feel tiny inside(that model does anyways)
Test drive a yaris and you wont regret it me thinks :-)

A yaris was top of my list for awhile but they are pricey
any of the ones i have been looking at in my price range have
    high milage

Dont mind all those people who think 1litres is too small. Iv a 1.0 corsa flies up to 120-130 for the motorways and very comfortable at it! Low tax, great economy too! Micras a great car to start off!

Yeah the yaris is slightly pricey but holds its value better than the rest, try buy private youll get a way better deal than through a dealer or cbg/carzone (most of the cars on those sites are WAY overpriced)

You should get a 02/03 yaris with moderate mileage(say 70K) for 3K easy enough if you shop around/haggle...its a buyers market you should be able to get what you want.
And in 3 or 4 years time youll get over a grand back for the car easily....keep an eye daily on the buy and sell...try buy the mag as it is more up to date than the web and youll pick up a bargain that way.
If you dont know anyone who knows cars well ring a mechanic to go with you....worth the €50 for yor own peace of mind.
Seriously though dont spend 3K on a 02/03 micra when you can get a same year yaris...theres no comparison.
    Marty.

    Edit...quick sconce on the B&S 03 yaris for 3.5K just NCT'd 72K
you could get it for 3K with a bit of charm :-)

    and a five door one.

colt has no go in it at all...

1.3 corolla, civic or maybe a fiesta.... Corolla being my personal pick.... 3 to 5th gear without 4th.... can launch slowly in 3rd so its great for the ice...

Most relyable cars around as well.

She is looking for a 1.2Litre or under...otherwise id be steering her towards a corolla myself.
The Yaris has a high BHP for a 1.0 litre ~75 IIRC.

Some nice yaris's you linked to there...youll never see one in bad condition, as i said its a buyers market so take your time and get what you want...also all those prices are very negotiable :D .
Your aim (IMO so as to insure your best return on investment down the line) would be a clean 03 one with ~70K for 3K or a little over.

    Marty.

The Yaris is superior to the Micra despite being an older design.

The only thing to look out for on the Yaris is that the radio works properly and that the water pump isn't rattling. other than signs of neglect or damage, there's very little else to worry about.

Body looks tidy from the pics, apart from the obligatory dent on the metal valance of the rear bumper

I do have my heart set on a yaris i'm just having a quick look at the micra since they're at the same place i dont particularly like the shape of the newer modals.

Rattling water pump u say.......i'll get someone who knows a bit about cars to take a look with me :) Thanx

Best of luck with it... should be able to get a yaris cheaper than that one though you.
Try get a 03 one with ~70K for just over 3K as i said...then you are on a winner.

That second Micra is a bit expansive but that was the best model of them all, they have little to no problems and come with NATS so no one will steal it.

If not the Yaris is also perfect but to be honest both of them are perfect little cars and rarely give hassle. The first Yaris has some gearbox issues but thats it.

Colt mentioned there, I wouldn't get, first it needs timing belt changes while the other two are chains, and the other the fan belt pulley always comes off(known fault) and causes hassle and cost.
