    Hi all,
Just wondering what variants of CAD are in use by boardsies.

I'll start, after learning p&p at school (pencil and paper, Excellent Tech Graphics result for Junior Cert, not so great for Leaving Cert) and two or three classes on a CAD package that had a game of Xs and Os somewhere in the program, at college I learned these:

    AutoCAD (2004)

    Pro Engineer(I forget the version)

Also some other 3DCAD package whose name escapes me.

On my laptop at the moment, are these:

    AutoCAD (2004)-Came with the laptop

Realsoft 3D- Version 4.5. This came on a CD with a computer magazine, along with a demo for 5.1. Currently getting to grips with it for home projects. More of a visual modeller than a serious CAD package.

    Erm, Lego Digital Designer (3.0)- I couldn't resist :)

Started with pen/pencil and paper in secondary school.

Self-taught Autocad R14 for leaving cert project.

Went on to add a few more in through college.

    Currently, I have on the computer, or I at least know a decent amount of;
    For 2D
    Autocad 2004-2008
    Microstation XM

    For 3D
    Viz and 3DS
    Artlantis
    V-Ray
    Sketch-up

Started off with pencil and paper too in school, progressed to ink in college, with 1 hour a week of AutoCAD R2.5 running on DOS.

    Currently have/using

    REVIT Architectural Suite (latest release)
    AutoCAD LT 2008-2010

    Sketchup

I started with technical drawing in school also, after school I became a draftsman with lead and ink - a lost art now. In 1990 I trained on AutoCAD 10 and later worked with AutoCAD 11, 12, 14 and 2007. After that I worked with ProE Wildfire and Ive been working with SolidWorks 2009 and MagNet since. Ive used other CAD packages over the years but only briefly, I think Ive used about 12 packages in total.

I started also using pencil and paper in school:
    Tech drawing for leaving cert,
I loved drawing and did both art and tech d in school and still take art classes today.

Moved onto college (architectural technology) and started using AutoCAD 2004
Switched to pen on the board

Then moved onto building services and AutoCAD 2006

Then started working in an office with full 2007 for just over 2 years

Then started in a new place with only release 14!!!!
Complete nightmare, its really difficult to go backwards!

Then moved onto 2009 and 2010 for 3D drawings
    (both surface and solid modeling)

Done a little work in revit architecture and in inventor both 2010

I tried sketch up before i ever used cad and taught it was brilliant and recently tried used it and the frustration was unbelievable..
Its so awkward and not accurate at all

    Then 2002 LT
    ZWCad was tried.

Autocad LT 2009 and Autocad LT 98 installed.

Would prefer 98 - it's slimmer and faster.

For 3D, I am familiar with Inventor - top package

Autocad is a particular package. not a generic name and it doesn't run on linux, or mac for that matter.

FreeCad is the name used by two packages than run on linux, they are also public license

QCad runs on public licence too (for the community version) and comes in a upgraded professional version.

I have no exp of any, first guess was that QCad version might be best (due to having a pro version), but they could have most features locked in the free.

Try them out, you'll knoe soon enough, or even by screen shots and descriptions.

I just upgraded from AutoCAD 2009 to 2010 (Full). I can't stand LT unless I'm using LT-Extender (which is now defunct).

Pencil, paper, T-square, etc., in secondary school.

Pencil progressed to Autocad v14 in college.
This progressed through many versions to about 2006 version.

Learned Vectorworks v11.5 through work and practice. It is a program targeted more for architecture than autocad which is firstly an engineering program.

For 3d work I use sketch-up for quick models or Vectorworks for photo-montage type imaging. Have used 3d max and viz in the past.

Using nigh on 20 yrs. Think Release 10/11. Soooo long ago.
Use 2002Lt now, but still through .pgp file so any of the newer ones dont make a difference to me really. Imho it wasnt broke so why "fix" it? Still prefer the old DOS, ones believe it or not. Use the same amount of commands daily now that I did way back when....
The other discussion about printers was interesting. Still have the 1220c and still, after 9years, like new...
Now, where did I leave me walking stick....:D

2008 Lt is my favourite I get so cross when they bring out new ones every year with useless features and omitting other important ones that you've gotten used to.
    Hate ADT.
    Ah cad! I love you!

When I was at school we didn't even have computers! Got an A Level in Building and Geometric drawing.

Think it was about 1995 with a local council in the UK that I had my drawing board taken away and a PC dumped on the desk. We used GDS which was subsequently replaced by MicroGDS, unusual in that you drew to scale rather than 1:1

I use mostly Microstation V8 now as I work for a company that does a lot of railway work, sit in my lounge in Tipp updating London Underground drawings :D
Also have Autocad 2008 for non railway jobs although it always takes me a couple of days to get back used to it. Translating an Acad survey into LU Microsation standard can keep me amused for hours
