Driving Tips for Current Road Conditions

I'm somewhat nervous about taking the car out tomorrow to return to work in Finglas, Dublin. The road I live on is in a dip with sloping roads both left and right of me. There has been little to no traffic on these roads and they're still covered in snow/ice. Can someone provide me with tips for driving in icy conditions? Should I stick to 2nd gear to get me up the sloping side roads out of the estate? What do I do if the car skids, take foot off accelerator and hit the brakes? I'm not being funny and apologise if it seems stoopid but I haven't had to consider these things before and I would prefer to avoid crashing at all costs.

    Google is your friend ;)

Just one of the sites found

In general: SLOW DOWN!, low gears, no abrupt reactions (i.e. no fast acceleration, breaking, steering).

If car starts skidding, foot off the accelerator, use clutch and gently break WITHOUT locking up (pumping movement)

(If your car is fitted with ABS the electronics will do the thinking, just press the peddal hardish and steer where you want to go).

If you accelerate and the wheels spin, take foot off accelerator and then gently start again. A spinning wheel offers no gripp (and the amount of people shown on TV at the moment trying to move on the road and spinning the wheels is amazing )

Some of the tips found on the web also depend on your car (ABS, front or rear wheel drive,...)

The people in the motors forum can offer more advice.

slow down but driving at 5mph when all other traffic is driving quite safely at 30mph puts everyone in danger, stopping or slowing down behind these slow fools is easy enough but trying to pass them by crossong onto a different lane that is still snow covered presents the danger!
