Meath beat Longford 2-13 to 0-13 in Ballymahon. We were unlucky to be behind at half time as we hit the crossbar twice. We were 4 points down at half time but scored 1-5 in the first 7 minutes of the second half and never looked back. Jamie Queeney and Joe Sheridan got the goals. Peader Byrne got some magnificent scores as well.
Referee was very poor and gave far too many soft frees so it was a very stop start game. But a decent performance (in the second half anyway) for the middle of January.

    Dublin next :D

Any players stand out for Meath?

Peader Byrne was probably the best player. Jamie Queeney and Joe Sheridan did well. In the backs McGuinness and Graham Reilly did well.
In terms of the new lads, David Lyons didn't have anything to do really but his kickouts were decent. Macken at full back did well in the second half. Conor Gillespie got some great marks in midfield but was a little bit hesitant on the ball. And Owen Gilsenan covered a lot of ground and should have gotten a goal near the end but for a great save by the Longford keeper.

Always "interesting" going to Parnell Park to say the least. I wasn't really made feel welcome by the locals last time to say the least :p

Yeah Queeney impressed me in the later stages of Meath's AI run last year. Could do a job.

Limerick's legs gave up on them in the end, being expected to play two matches in 24 hours is a joke. Typical GAA.

kildare 0-15 ucd 1-9..good game bit scrappy at times bothsides finished with 14 players dermot earley sent off for off the ball elbow to john o,loughlin of ucd (no love lost there )

I'll take this opportunity to correct you there,

Earley got sent of for second Yellow, which was for pushing one of the UCD players into the face.
There was no elbow involved whatsoever.
He deserved his yellow for the incident, but lets not make something out of nothing here.

Two late goals by Kieran Donaghy save Kerry from defeat by Waterford in the McGrath Cup semi final.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9RhTIQ-K_g

First goal was typical Donaghy but the second was an amazing diving punch.
Game marred by serious looking knee injury to new Kerry Captain Bryan Sheehan.

Deadly stuff. Second goal was class. I'm a massive fan of Donaghy's.

fair enough if it was a push but surely someone of earleys experience should not have put his team under pressure with stupidity like it,much tougher tests ahead and kildare need the class of earley on the pitch

Good goals by Donaghy. Kerry wearing jerseys from 5 years ago!

Was at Kilkenny v Offaly earlier, Offaly won 1.23 to 0.6, not a fair reflection of the game, KK just couldn't get the scores they deserved and did well in the 2nd half only losing 0.10 to 0.5.

Absolutely delighted the season is back on track...it's been a long couple of months!

This was never going to be fair. Tipp were in the same boat albeit against LIT, who would not be up to the same level as CIT. CIT have a good team this year, but I would have backed Limerick to beat them, but not after playing on Saturday.

In either case, it does not really matter. They would have found out a lot about how their players are doing fitness wise and probably gave a lot of lads a run over the two games. Hopefully its a preamble for Limerick to storm up through the league.

7 sent off in Portlaoise today, 5 in first half after a mass brawl. Didn't take long for this kind of crap to rear its ugly head again this season. Will anything meaningful be done to try to stamp it out? Will it fu.........

I caught some of the Walsh cup tie between UCD and Antrim today. It was the last 10 minutes and UCD looked comfortable enough.

Hopefully the same kind of punishments will be handed out as was handed out after the Dublin v Meath brawl in Parnell Park back in 2008.

He started exceptionally well and I do rate him as a very very bright prospect, but two words of caution, he was marking Tomas Stapelton who although he was afine minor has gone very much backwards in the last two years and infact was outshone by he's younger brother playing for their club last year, and he is still a harty cup player.

And secondly I thought Conlon tired and faded out of the game pretty badly, I know its early in the year and underfoot conditions were testing but surely someone of he's age/profile should be fitter that most at this time of the year, Im sure its nothing to be overly concerned about just was suprised and will be interested to see how he holds up in the league.

McKenna Cup Final is between Donegal and Tyrone on Saturday in Enniskillen. 7.30pm.

    TG4 showing it.

Both teams served up a cracker in the group game which ended in a draw, Donegal 2-17, Tyrone 4-11 with Murphy scoring 2-9.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

Stephen O' Neill had to be carried off in an ambulance during the McKenna Cup final. Looked like a serious arm injury. Could be out for a few months.

Dislocated his elbow. Out for a couple of months probably, but if I was a Tyrone supporter I'd rather he did that now than in the middle of June.

Kildare seem to be missing quite a few by all accounts , despite that they've been backed from 1/2 to 1/3 with Powers

Kerry won against UCC in the McGrath - UCC had basically a second string side out, they played the first round of the Sigerson on Wednesday, second round next Wednesday

UCC beat UL in the Waterford Crystal, playing the winners of Clare and Waterford in the final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 793 ✭✭✭tatoo

Waterford easily disposed of Clare , 1.17 to 0.8 .
    So it's a Waterford v UCC final .

DCU beat Meath 15 points to 12 in Navan. 3 players were sent off, 2 for Meath. Referee was extremely poor as it wasn't a dirty game. He also seemed to give DCU every chance by giving soft frees to DCU and allowing DCU away with blatant fouls.
Ah well we got 4 good competitive games before the league so I'm happy.

Wasn't playing. Didn't make the bench. This was a much more experimental side than the Dublin games.
A bit worried that Brian Meade will be out for the first 2 league games because of his sending off. No idea what it was for. A DCU player was on the ground so he must have raised his hands but not 5 minutes later, a DCU player grabbed Niall McKeigue around the neck in front of the ref and he escaped with only a warning
