Was gonna suggest that but unless I'm misinterpreting AC's post entirely, he says:
Does anyone know of an optical switch that I could control with this.

So he'd essentially need an Optical Switch with an IR Port / remote control.

Outside of buying a decoder / amplifier (which will set you back a fair bit), I don't see of an optical switch with an IR port.

PS - God bless my €80 now-discontinued-but-much-sought-after Creative DDTS-100 decoder (3 Optical inputs, 1 Coaxial input, 3 Analogue stereo inputs, 7.1 Analogue input/output (via Switch Box), 2 Headphones outputs )!

Lads...can you buy higher capacity Li-Ion replacement batteries online?....the 785 has 850 Milli Amp....but if you can get a larger capacity one = longer life ?

So does this only work with a PS3 if you get the adapter? no way round it?

Nope. I picked up a cheap PS3 remote (with dongle) off DealExtreme for a few euro and was able to configure it to work with my PS3.

It won't switch it on / off though!

Ah right, i had one of those cheap ones with a dongle but i gave it to a mate when i got the official remote instead... time for a swap i think :)

Does that one you have use a tiny round watch type battery?

    Don't think so.

This is the exact one I ordered: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10879

Ah right, i got one of these Link

It's fairly brutal to be honest so i might get a better one instead.

As you can see, the one I got was a fiver..

It's decent but the delay after pressing a key can be sometimes quite laggy.

To be honest.. unless you pay for the over-priced PS3 adapters (€45?!?!) for it, you won't get much better!

I'll give my crappy one a try first anyway! might be ok i suppose. You're right, €45 for an adapter is a bit of a rip off alright!

Can I ask some advice? Would it be worth my while getting one of these? I only have an old xbox, vcr and lcd tv....I don't even have digital. I'm currently using one of the lidl universal remotes which is great. How is this better please?

Probably not worth it Mabel Harsh Seeker...

The XBox needs an IR dongle (as far as I can remember.. I have one with XBMC lying somewhere) to be able for you to control it.

What the Harmony has over other Universal remotes is "Activities" where you a multitude of devices broadcasting on different extensions (e.g Sky Box on one scart port, DVD player on another scart port, Xbox 360 on a HDMI port) and it'll switch on the individual devices and also switch the LCD to the required extension.

If you don't think you'll need it, you won't. If you're happy with it, stick with the Lidl one I'd say!

I picked up the last one in Mahon earlier today, it took a while to set up correctly, but now its a sweet replacement for my previous 3 remote system. The main obstacle was my eu*ovox receiver..... that was a bit awkward and required alot of manual setup. However the software is fairly idiot-proof.

    Thanks o/p

Not 100% sure this is actually an upgrade from the 555 :S Colour screen looks like something from 1985, v low res and dreadful contrast and viewing angle.

More annoying, the keys don't seem to be backlit - can someone else confirm this is the case?

I do like the 6 activities per page...

    c

Colour screen would be poor enough resolution but adequate for the task.

only activities key is backlit (surrounded by a lit blue plastic surround)

I got the 2nd last one in Blanch & I cannot set it up as it will not connect to the internet as it says I have no connection.

I have 7mb Broadband and this thing cannot get a connection!

I've turned off my firewall, pop up blocker but the Anti Virus I'm running, AVG, is not showing up on the list they provide you with.

    I'm freaking out!

    This was on my application.

If the Harmony Remote encounters a connection error, click Show Status for a diagnosis of the problem, it is important to note the error message when you call Customer Support.

There is a phone no in the docummentation.

3 left in stock in the branch inside the centre - none left on the shelves though, so you'll have to ask...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,132 ✭✭✭silvine

Cheers for that but from the reviews I've read online it doesn't do much more than the 555. I think I'll leave it.

Money off on remotes on Amazon at the moment:

Logitech Harmony 525 Advanced Universal Remote Control €46
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000BFGZS0/ref=pe_35681_18327351_pe_epc_d7

Philips SRU8008/10 Prestigo 8-in-1 Remote Control £30, but it says it won't ship to my address...

Thanks again bargain alerts for persuading me to spend money on crap I don't need and never knew I wanted, or even existed.

Hey Bazery, can you confirm if its the 785 or the Harmony one thats in stock at Mahon Point. Had a look for the 785 when this thread started but there was none on display in Mahon. Might drop down at lunch time but confirmation might save me the bother. What price is it now ? Thanks Macer.
