Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No TV - the New Cool?

I have a few friends who don't have a television and have no intention of getting one again. They say they can watch what they want on DVD on their computers.

It seeems like a new status symbol, not to have a TV.

What do boardsies think? Is having no TV the new cool?

I have a TV and my mom thinks I'm cool.

With TV On Demand getting more popular and whatever variation Ireland has. There less and less need for it.

I've been watching less and less. More DVDs, streaming and online news for my daily fix.

people that brag about not having a television are the same kind of people that take out an acoustic guitar at a party (i.e. ****)

On the other hand, a wide-screen tv is also a status symbol. This is a tricky one. We're in over our heads here I feel.

if you dont have one, then fine. no need to brag about it.

Having a pc hooked up to your tv is a much better idea. All the advantages of watching something on your pc but on a 40" screen

Ugh, nothing worse. Then because i can play guitar they try to push it on me, leaving me with the choice of them thinking i'm a wanker for not playing or me feeling like a wanker for playing. I opt for the former.

Or them thinking you're a complete wanker for breaking the thing over their head. I'd go with that option.

The more I read boards the more I realise that you are bang on with all your observations!!! Agree completely.

I assume you despise shows like the Hills and all those who watch them, yes!?

    I haven't got a Tv, I have a 50 inch wide screen viewing device...

I barely watch tv, but if I want to watch a dvd it's gotta be on a tv.
Just isn't the same on a computer.

With a tv license costing €160, the person with a tv is the fool.

    I agree with phasers here.
I can't stand when people on boards or any other forums brag about wathcing telly on the internet. Wow! Who gives a fúck? I'd rather watch telly on a telly and leave the laptop/computer for what it's supposed to be used for: boards, bebo and porn.

Doesn't matter as long as they can play the guitar well and know some great songs...

    Sing song time :)

I don't brag about not having a tv I just insist that everyone else follow my lead and their fools to still be slaves to the media giants paying to watch adds.

We just have one telly, sky plus is genius. I never have to watch ads :) I think that I could live without it although if I didn't live at home I probably would have to, tv licence is expensive...

If you're going to play Leonard Cohen at a party, play Suzanne. Guaranteed you have a better chance of getting laid. At least that's how the world should work.

I have a massive TV, watch it all the time, infact I've got ExtremeSports on right now. Ride guid snow is on, awesome.
I'm also that guy that will crack out an acoustic guitar at a party but only when some one asks me too. Other than that, you can find me, can/bottle in hand going on a mad one.

I do though, watch a lot of Anime on my computer but if I could get it on TV or even on DVD I'd rather watch is on the big lovely LCD screen.
    Mmmmmm, TV...

Play guitar all you want, just don't so it at a party. It kills the atmosphere cos everybody has to sit and listen while mr arsehole (not you) plays his crappy songs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭kraggy

I haven't watched tv in a few years now.

Not because I think it's cool to not do so, but because tv is crap.

I'm a passionate film head so would go to the cinema and watch DVD's very frequently.

But tv is tripe. You have to watch hours and hours to get a couple of decent hours worth.

And Doesn't the TV license apply to computers, anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,462 ✭✭✭MaybeLogic

    What does this mean?

It stands for 'Quod Erat Demonstrandum',latin, translated literally as 'which was to be demonstrated',normally found at the end of mathematical proofs but often used by Renaissance scholars, or Irish Boardsies ,to conclude a proof or to highlight when something has been demonstrated.

Any device that can pick up the signal I believe, so if the computer has a TV card it needs a license, otherwise no.

But good luck to the TV license inspector trying to figure out what's in your computer.

Also I have no TV but because I'm a poor student who steals TV shows from the internet, it's not "cool", it's convenient, and getting a nice big TV and using it as a screen for the computer would be pretty cool.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,462 ✭✭✭MaybeLogic

I opted out of having a TV years ago, long before I had a computer (which is only in the last 3 months).
While there is a lot of good stuff on the box ,there is also plenty of drivel and I found myself, lacking in self-control as I am sometimes, spending hours and hours watching that samesaid drivel.
By getting rid of the telly I didn't have that option anymore and I had to find other things to do to fill my time, read a book, listen to music,go to the gym,go out and socialise.
And then along came the internet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,559 ✭✭✭✭AnonoBoy

    No no no.

Not having a TV is the old 'new cool'. The new 'new cool' is not having a washing machine.

"Oh yeah, I like totally handwash all my clothes at this organic spring that runs along the back of my garden. It takes me about 2 hours every night. I can't believe some people actually still think having a Hotpoint is something to brag about."
