Going looking at 2 cars tomorow for my son ( At Last )

    One is a nice clean 97 Civic 1.4 NCT'd * Taxed

The other is a 99 Corolla G6. 1.3 Nice clean car again with Nct & Tax.

Both are around the 100k mark.

While I know the Corolla is 2 years newer.
Which one would be the better car?
Both are within €300 of each other so price is not an issue
Insurance is withing €40 of each other as well.

    Thanks

I'd say there is not a whole lot different between the two cars in the real world. The G6 has a 6 speed gearbox as opposed to the Civic's 5 speed, again in the real world it might not be very relevant day to day.

Both were popular with boyracers so be on the alert for signs of abuse or strange modifications.

    Hi,
Both are in very nice condition.
    Werent the typical boy racer-mobiles.

G6 has only got nice alloys and an induction kit. The rest is standard.

The civic only got a type R kit.. ( F&B Lip, Grill and skirts) and is fully color coded. Mild alloys ( 15")
Nothing else done to the car

I'd go with the Corolla this time (providing it's not too expensive) as they're a whole lot nippier than a 1.4 Civic.
Image wouldn't be quite as dodgy on the Corolla either.

I'd go the opposite for the opposite reason. Owned a Civic for 3 years and drove both the 1.3 Corolla and 1.4 newer Corolla. Neither felt as quick as the Civic. Civic was nicer to drive too, Corolla was a little dull. Both are good cars though, but the Type R kit on the Civic would put me off.

My friend had bith cars a few years ago,

the civic was good nice car and will do the job,

the toyota i have to say would be my choice there was just something a bit extra about the toyota plus on this it is 2 years better off so i would go for the tioyota

The Civic would have marginally more poke, but it's also a lot better looking. The pre-2000 Corolla front end is manky.

    Thanks lads.
Going to look at the Civic tomorow
wish me luck ( I need it after some of the buckets I have viewed over the last week )

Failing this it will be the G6 on Wednesday :)

The G6 all the way, great car.. and up in the years. The G6 has vvti as far as I remember think the 1.4 civic is non vtec.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

What are the asking prices, OP?

The G6 doesn't have vvti. Puts out a decent 85bhp tho. The Civic 1.4 is also very basic, but puts out an also decent 90bhp.

Worth noting the Civic has double wishbone suspension at all 4 corners, whereas the Coroslla has McPherson struts front and some type of beam at the back.

If I were your son, I know I'd prefer the Corolla.

The EK Civic is the best looking of the lot IMO.

No,the corolla has independent suspension on the back,as they have had since the mid 80's.Its the starlet that had the beam rear axle.I've owned 3 corollas and 2 civics in the past, one is as good as the other.Civic feels a lighter car alright, and is slightly easier on juice if driven handy.Bulletproof engine also.Make sure the g6 isnt the 1.6 version 4afe engine as they're a guzzler.I'd go for the civic, maybe its the boy racer in me:) but seriously, check them over with a fine tooth comb as both them models are boy racer magnets and could have seen the wrong side of a ditch at some stage..

With 10 and 12 year old cars I'd be testing both and judging them on their merits while not paying attention to what name is on the badge

Exactly. Drive them both and then decide.

    You'll get the Civic. ;)

    Civic = 2200

    G6 = 2000

Civic is a fresher looking car though.

Yeah, must have been owned by pensioners, the pensioners love their induction kits, alloys and typr r bodykits :)

I can only assume you know what a Boy Racer (Heap of scrap ) looks like
I am 51 and I love the sound of an induction kit and the Looks of Alloys and Typr "r" Kits.
    And I am on a Pension ;)

A boy racer typically drives a small engined car with alloys, induction kit and body kits, both the Corolla and Civic you describe sound like they have been owned by boy racers.

in your opinion of course, assumption is the mother of all Feckups in my opinion.

I'd have the civic depending on condition of both cars.

Only just fallen across this, and I have to say, good choice.

Although having said that my first car was a Civic CR-X 1.6i16... so I may have been turned by this fact...

My 5dr Civic 1.4 was a fantastic bit of kit, driven gently I swear I could get over 50mpg from it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,686 ✭✭✭JHMEG

Very clean looking car, well wear. Type-R kit looks excellent on it.

    I presume it's a jap import?

The Civic is definitely nicer than the 99 Corollas :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,719 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

    Actually never mind, it's a 1.3, it's jap :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,616 ✭✭✭✭vectra

Jap Import Id say. Kilometers on the clock

Happy with my choice I think ;)

Just splashed out almost 4k today between buying it and insuring it.
Must get the piggy bank in order again first :D

    Fair play, OP.
    They car looks lovely.
I love civics before they get messed up, very hard to find a clean one these days.

    Well wear!

No clock, but has A/C? Has no glare guards over the headlamp bulbs? It also has possibly no immobliser. Those that do have a green key symbol that flashes 6 times on the dash when the engine is turned off, but the earlier jap imports didn't have them. Make sure you have a good aftermarket alarm and a padlock and chain if your's is one of those.

Does she have LiPo or NiMH? :D
As long as he keeps the racing indoors, he'll be grand!

I'd go with the corolla as I was nearly killed in a civic type R replica. The bloody wheel came off it:rolleyes:
