Good stuff, I may have to stay up again so tonight!

What had been thought (hoped) earlier in terms of precip over Scotland doesn't seem to be the case now, seems to be dissipating over the Irish sea...

Yes, those two bands of showers in Ulster earlier were the remains of the heavy convection over Scotland. Most of that convection hadn't been making it across to Ulster all day, but a small bit of vorticity at 500hPa gave those two a burst of energy, and actually caused them to intensify over land tonight.

For us further south though we're not going to have that vorticity helping hand, so we're relying purely on pure sea-effect convection for our action tonight.

well its pathetic, is nt it? 40 cm of snow forecast for central england, meanwhile over here there are people praying for a few stray showers to come in off the irish sea, i mean its so sickening and disheartening. i may just have to leave the country, everthing here is always so diluted and banal.

    Painfully true :(

I wonder is there any chance the system over Southern England will join forces with the other mass of cloud over NW England and then make a beeline for Ireland?

    Slight chance even?

What exactly causes it to fall as now instead of hail?

Looks like a shower as made it as far inland as Carlow.

    Just a little bit further!!!

I'm seriously snow deprived, there hasnt been more than a dusting that melted by 10 a.m. in approx. 15 years where I am!!!

My childhood is marked by a lack of snowmen and sledding down hills!!! We get the coldest temperatures, frequently down to -7 this year, and no snow!!!

    There, rant over!!!

Some of that pretty big hail that came down just after 2300. It certainly made noise.

Hailstones in Blessington for about 30 seconds :(

Projected precip charts show no signs of widespread snow potential for the forseeable future. We are just too far west to be influenced by a LP from the continent.

Heavy hail and snow falling in Ballymun. Actually just starting to ease off a little, turning to very litle snow.
