    Hi all,
I'm considering purchasing a 2007-2009 Focus as I have seen some decent deals. I have seen no price chance since the start of the new year and I'm just wondering what sort of cash discount should I be aiming for? Given an price of 12000-15000, what should I try to bargain for?

Would I be better just to go North/UK?

I'd offer 10% less... lets face it, dealers aren't exactly over worked. How many have gone bust? I bet they wish they had given a few more discounts now.

If they say anything stupid... just ask "do you actually sell cars here or not?"

Best advice is to forget about discounts and focus on how much you are prepared to pay for a particular car. 10% off an OTT price may be a much poorer deal than 2% off a genuinely competitive price, for example. When deciding whether or not to follow su guru's advice, ask yourself whether you're looking for the right car at the best price or whether you're more interested in insulting one sales person in retaliation for the perceived sins of others.

No. I just think that we should remember that dealers have built in margin for trade-ins etc. I have yet to buy a car at the asking price - and I've bought a few. However I have bought a car from one dealer for substatially lower price than another because he wanted to sell a car, not treat me like an arse.

Selling cars is not hard is it.

I've bought many cars, and I can tell you categorically that getting the best deal has a lot more in common with seduction than with assault. A combative attitude puts you at an immediate disadvantage in any form of negotiation.

I'm not disagreeing completely.. and in general when I think back I did back cars from salesmen I "seduced"...haha I like that.

But buyers can too easily be bullied by salesmen with a "well you have to come to me if you want car X" attitude..

FYI.. I moved to Kerry from the UK 2 years ago.. in the UK there are 1000's of dealers with 1000's of customers.. and cars are cheaper.. maybe a buyer has the luxury to be more aggressive there?

but stil... the tag is a starting point .. not the end point! Also you can bargin on other things. Mats, mudflaps, services..
