Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Dont be doing a continous ping to google.ie, its not hosted in Ireland.
Its best to use an site hosted in Ireland such as www.rte.ie or www.boards.ie

A good website to ping in galway/mayo is heanet.ie.

Also with about 60-70% of their traffic going to Google there will always be a bottleneck, try pinging www.inex.ie, from there on won't be in westnets control. Do a tracert.

Ping tests to local servers yield much the same results.

The last time i was talking to them we agreed where the problem lies and what they were doing to remedy it, my post was more of a "come on lads don't take the mick" type of post, i'm a reasonably patient man but 4/5 months is in no way shape or form an acceptable timeline to be waiting for a fix.

I'll post back results from a local server this evening if anyone is interested, but the ping spikes and packet loss will be similar.

Just to keep things balanced i will say late night/early morning the connection is perfect, absolutely perfect, single digit pings to boards.ie which i'm told is a Galway based server, with bandwidth right on the nose at 2 down 1 up, zero packet or ping spikes.
So when it works it works bloody well.

Just talked to Peter from Westnet he said they should have everything sorted by the end of march, they have all the kit and they just need to install it.

I was told the same thing when i rang in early February, i was told it would be good in a "couple of weeks" and still we wait, same old story.

If i payed 20% of my bill every month for 5 months do you think they would let it slide? seeing as i reckon i'm getting about 20% of what i'm paying for and all. :)

Anyone from Westnet got any update for me?

    @liamnojo92 You heard any news?

As you can see it's still terrible at peak times.

Totally and utterly unuseable today, as it is every day for the past number of months, i've just spent the past 30 mins trying to get a webpage to load without success, nevermind getting onto xbox live or watching Sky player.
I'd post a speedtest/pingtest result but the page simply times out.
    Edit:
    37725690.png

There was a time where i hated using my Vodafone 3g dongle because of the horrible load times and limited bandwidth but it's now what i use at home by choice, and it outperforms Westnet by a country mile these days.

Upgrading of the network should have been in place long before Westnet over subscribed the network, never mind waiting 5 months and counting for it to be fixed.

It's an absolute disgrace, 45 euros a month on top of a 200 euro installation fee for this by the way, good to see rip of Ireland is still alive and kicking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 320 ✭✭liamnojo92

Ok I think they're done fixing it,Was offline for maybe 20 minutes now it seems good(not 100% sure yet though)
Edit:Gone bad again:( also got a text saying the majority the backbone will be completed by friday weather permitting.

That is really not the point, you are not comparing apples with apples.

    They are two different technologies.

I am paying €60 a month EX VAT for 3Mb down and 1Mb up............ here is what I am getting today.

    1246657683.png

Sometimes the connection can preform to the standard I am paying for but that is only 5% of the time.

I work in IT and often people ask me about broadband, both business and residential customers. I would tell people if they could get Westnet then to do so, that I had it and was very pleased with the quality and level of service. You get what you pay for, was my closing line.

Now when people ask what I recommend I can no longer say Westnet, the service levels over the past 6 months are just dire. I have contacted them on a number of occasions but the issue is still there, it might improve for a few days but it will come back.

I can no longer make any VOIP call without running the risk of looking like a fool having to explain to customers why they can not hear their tech support person (me) because I have a rubbish internet connection.

The only thing stopping me from moving to Three (only other option in my area) is that I have a loyalty, misguided or otherwise, to Westnet. They brought broadband here when all eircom did was laugh at us.

Still at €60 EX VAT/month that loyalty will only last so long when I could get the same level of service from Three for €20 inc VAT.

Here are some more speedtest results.

    @godskitchen

Exactly the point i was trying to make.

Numerous phone calls and e-mails have gone either un-answered, of have resulted in broken promises of, "We'll have it fixed next week."

I've been listening to the above quoted line for 6 months now, the reason for posting regular speed/pingtest results is to show others the standard of service that Westnet provide, or are not providing as it happens.

Unfortunately for Westnet, that service has been poor for 6 months now and that is reflected in the reply's in this thread.

    Ok, quick update.

Having talked to Peter today, i've been told the upgrades to the network have been completed, and have been for around a week now.

In order to eliminate the slight chance that there is a problem with just my connection, i.e. misalignment of the reciever, could i get others to post what their connection is up to today/tonight.

Again, i highly doubt this problem is just limited to my network, however i would like to eliminate the possibility as much as i can.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes indeed it's that time again people!

Still having horrible connection issues at peak times, had an engineer out yesterday, and as i had thought there are no problems my end.

Could i once again ask customers of Westnet in or around the Balla area to post some ping tests, especially at peak times (8pm-11pm).

If there are multiple people with bad connections then the problem lies within their network.

    Thanks in advance.

Also having porblems in Clonbur I think we're routed through the Balla network too and that's where the problem was before.

    Thanks for the speedy reply.

Having spoken to the engineers over the past couple of days, they seemed to be happy they had enough bandwidth to cover everyone connected to the cell, so according to them they have'nt oversubscribed the network, so i'm stumped as to what could be causing the congestion.

I can run the ping test again at a silly time of the morning and it'll come back crystal clear, every time.

The main usage for the westnet connection for me is for online gaming, i got it specifically for the low latency, and with the kind of results we see above it's pretty much unuseable.

I cancelled my subscription on Friday just gone, i'd rather go without internet altogether than give the shower of cowboys known as Westnet any more of my hard earned money.

I would also suggest anyone else that has suffered from this crippling joke of a connection to do the same as me.

My connection has gone to pot again, right now having to use my phone as a WiFi hotspot through Three to post this.

    The connection is unusable.

    I am routed through Newport.

I don't think its a capacity issue, it seems to me that it is a problem at their main hub.

Spoke to them again last night, and i really don't think they have a clue what's going on, the problems we're all having is screaming out that the capacity on the cell has been surpassed but according to them there should be plenty left to play with.

He was supposed to run a test on my line last night and get back to me, surprise surprise still no phone call back, typical.

I've been using my 3g vodafone connection for the past week, latency to a local server of ~70ms, DL ~3.5Mb, UL ~0.7Mb

In comparison to Westnet: Latency 20-1500ms DL/UL ~0.3Mb

Vodafone costs me 20E a month, Westnet costs me 45E, it's a no brainer.

Any of you guys talk to them today??

I'm pretty sure they're are trying to fix something currently, because generally over the past year if the ping is constantly over 200ms they're working on something so I'm gonna wait until friday if it stays like this before I call them.

'The new link in Balla needs some physical tweaking, we'll be out there tomorrow to fix it'

    From Westnet just now.

Balla seems to always be the problem I might just see if I can get them to hook me up to the Ballinrobe one instead.

First off, apologies to any regular viewers of this sub-forum, i don't want to have to keep bumping this thread, but there is method to the madness, i'm trying to shame them into fixing my connection.

And here's what i'm getting out of my Vodafone 3G dongle.
Which is more than half the price of Westnet.

Main problem with westnet is how inconsistent the service is. Also noticed there are sometimes issues with loading pages without the www part of the domain.

Really unhappy with the service. Does anybody know what the contention ratio on digiweb's satellite service is?

Your speed should not be that low even when the latency is terrible at peak times I'm still getting around 1mb,I'd call them and get a technician round because it might be a problem on your side.

That would be fine if they would answer the phone or return calls...

The speed is not constantly that poor, but still there are serious drop-outs

cenahs, is your connection routed through Balla by any chance??

Possibly, would need to check. We're in the Ballina-Crossmolina area.

Ok, Balla would'nt be the first hop on your line, but i presume your data is routed through Balla at some stage of the process.

Reason i ask is becuase there has been a number of people routed through Balla and all of us seem to be having the same problems at exactly the same times. Balla is the first hop on my line as i live just outside of the town.

I would be wary about Digiweb, i've read a lot of negative reviews about their service, and as far as i know, latency is still going to be a big factor with a satelite connection, so that would rule out any sort of online gaming or skype calls etc. I think there is a thread posted in the broadband section of this forum about satelite connections if you want to do some reading up before you buy.

I have'nt got any further info on any likely "fix" from Westnet, at least not since last week when they said they were on the problem,(see my post further up this page)

Long story short, these issues have been going on since last October/November, i'm sick of ringing them and listening to the same dribble every time, i would'nt waste my time ringing their "office" number or their e-mail, they don't respond to them, i can PM you the mobile of one of the head guys over there if you'd like, you may have more success than i did, and to be honest, one more voice to our compalints can't hurt.

That's interesting to know. Might be worth putting in another call in that case. I think it would be fine if it was consistent. It's this crazy variance that is annoying. Thanks for your help.

The problem is definitely not a contention issue anyway I checked at 04:00 AM a few nights ago which at that time I'd normally have latency around 16ms to 20ms constantly and it was going from 20 to 90 and maybe every ten replies a ping of 100 or so,Hopefully they're still trying to fix balla and haven't just given up on it.

Could these issues be caused by a few or even one person torrenting?

That's what I thought before but there's is no way there infrastructure is that bad that one person should affect everyone. Unless they have a huge amount of bandwidth that they shouldn't be getting.

R someone setup a botnet and is killing the line.

    @cenahs
    What IXP r u on?

No wireless providers like torrenting. A single well seeded torrent can have literally thousands of open connections so it may not even be a bandwidth issue.

Every teenager these days learns about Limewire/Bearshare/Frostwire etc from their friends at school, some install it, download a movie and forget about it and leave it running. Its what I've been busy clearing off people's computers.

    Shouldn't your Location be ::1/128? ;)

Westnet block all of the major torrenting sites and programs, if you try to run it you'll simply be disconnected from the internet.
    I don't have a problem with that.

Also, right now i'm getting my allocated bandwidth more or less, but the latency on the line is shocking beyond belief.
