Possibly, would need to check. We're in the Ballina-Crossmolina area.

Ok, Balla would'nt be the first hop on your line, but i presume your data is routed through Balla at some stage of the process.

Reason i ask is becuase there has been a number of people routed through Balla and all of us seem to be having the same problems at exactly the same times. Balla is the first hop on my line as i live just outside of the town.

I would be wary about Digiweb, i've read a lot of negative reviews about their service, and as far as i know, latency is still going to be a big factor with a satelite connection, so that would rule out any sort of online gaming or skype calls etc. I think there is a thread posted in the broadband section of this forum about satelite connections if you want to do some reading up before you buy.

I have'nt got any further info on any likely "fix" from Westnet, at least not since last week when they said they were on the problem,(see my post further up this page)

Long story short, these issues have been going on since last October/November, i'm sick of ringing them and listening to the same dribble every time, i would'nt waste my time ringing their "office" number or their e-mail, they don't respond to them, i can PM you the mobile of one of the head guys over there if you'd like, you may have more success than i did, and to be honest, one more voice to our compalints can't hurt.

That's interesting to know. Might be worth putting in another call in that case. I think it would be fine if it was consistent. It's this crazy variance that is annoying. Thanks for your help.

The problem is definitely not a contention issue anyway I checked at 04:00 AM a few nights ago which at that time I'd normally have latency around 16ms to 20ms constantly and it was going from 20 to 90 and maybe every ten replies a ping of 100 or so,Hopefully they're still trying to fix balla and haven't just given up on it.

Could these issues be caused by a few or even one person torrenting?

That's what I thought before but there's is no way there infrastructure is that bad that one person should affect everyone. Unless they have a huge amount of bandwidth that they shouldn't be getting.

R someone setup a botnet and is killing the line.

    @cenahs
    What IXP r u on?

No wireless providers like torrenting. A single well seeded torrent can have literally thousands of open connections so it may not even be a bandwidth issue.

Every teenager these days learns about Limewire/Bearshare/Frostwire etc from their friends at school, some install it, download a movie and forget about it and leave it running. Its what I've been busy clearing off people's computers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 62 ✭✭Tungsten Tide

    Shouldn't your Location be ::1/128? ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 44 fonzy1

Westnet block all of the major torrenting sites and programs, if you try to run it you'll simply be disconnected from the internet.
    I don't have a problem with that.

Also, right now i'm getting my allocated bandwidth more or less, but the latency on the line is shocking beyond belief.

Yup same with me, no problem with speed I actually get a bit more then I 'm paying for. I just wish the latency was like it used to be.

This is from 13:00 in the day not exactly peak times.

Does Westnet trottle megaupload? I tried downloading something from megaupload and was getting speeds of 40kbps. No good for icefilms:(

@Tungsten Tide will have to get back to you on the IXP - it's at my parents' house. Even though they've never had decent broadband they are frustrated beyond belief. Any time I visit I end up giving up on trying to even check email due to the latency issues.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭godskitchen

Mine has gone to crap again. I am really thinking about going with Three or setting up my own network for myself and neighbours......

  • Registered Users Posts: 320 ✭✭liamnojo92

Mines actually been really good for the past couple of weeks, are both you guys in the same area ? it could be something to do with the antenna on your house maybe ring a technician and see what the single strength is like.

my connection was completely down for 10 minutes so tried ringing them but only got weird ring tone are they still in byisness or what

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭godskitchen

Has anyone else seen an improvement?

My connection is bad/un useable during the day time. Its perfect in the middle of the night or early (7am) which would point to the network being over subscribed.

I have a neighbour with westnet too and they are about to move to Three, that tells you how bad the service has gone.

I am tired at this stage of calling them to inform them of problems for nothing to be fixed.

Same experience as that. Happened to up be very late for a flight two weeks ago. Speed was perfect in the middle of the night.

Says it all really. Connection from Balla. Two years of Sh** and still lousy. Going into Claremorris this afternoon to get a 3G dongle. €35.00 a month for this !!

I did some tweaking on Sunday that seems to have improved stability and ping times on the Balla link. If you PM me your details I can look at your own connection to see if there's a specific issue there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 Genghisosmosis

That's much better. Now lets see a bit of value. €35 a month is a bit steep these days for a 1mb connection.

It's been atrocious for the past few weeks randomly goes from being great to almost unusable.

    Westnet: Paul

My connection is dire, I am sick of calling the office and nothing happening.

What is so frustrating is that the connection is really good at night, its just a shame most of my work needs to be done in the day time.

I now have a viable alternative for €50 less a month, with faster upload and download, pings are higher but at least the connection works.

I will give you one more opportunity to correct this, after that my €75 a month and I are gone for good.

You can PM me for my phone number. I will be reporting back here to let others know how I got on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭godskitchen

I have had no communication since my last post on this matter. I will be cancelling the connection as soon as I get the chance.

The company has gone to crap.

edit: I am having to post this by connecting to my phone in 3G hotspot mode. The Westnet connection is so poor I cant even post a simple forum message.

I can't see any record of a call from you since June, although we were in contact with someone at your office on October 3 about an outstanding account.

I don't see an obvious problem with your connection, but if you call the office we can look at it again.

I don't see an obvious problem with your connection, but if you call the office we can look at it again.

When a customer calls, the least you do is return the call. This has only happened once in the last 2 years when I have called Westnet.

It has been the same every time I have called. I would be told I would get a call back every time, then nothing. I do not have time to be calling you. The connection also got better from time to time.

I can not work out why I have not had a site visit. The problem could be line of sight to my AP in Glenhest, 30 minutes would clear this up. I could get up on the roof myself and have a look but I can see why I should have to, I would not expect my customers to do that.

My neighbours who have a connection with Westnet are experiencing the exact same problems. They too will be terminating their connections soon.

I think it speaks volumes when a customer threatens to leave (a customer on a €75 a month package) and you fail to contact them until 9 days later.

I would appreciate if you could contact me privately to discuss my account and advise as to when you intend to pick up your equipment.
