I spent a few months there. Stayed in LA, Santa Barbra, Santa Monica, Pismo Beach, Laguna Beach, San Diego. Brilliant place. Would LOVE to go back. You will have a brilliant time.
We stayed in a hostel called the Bannana Bungalow. Check out their website, cool place. And if you can rent a car and tour around.

I went on holiday there a couple of years ago. VERY cool place. Seriously reccommend it!
