Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

misfuel- petrol in diesel engine

I filled my diesel car to the brim with petrol this evening and drove for over a mile before realising my mistake. The car didn't cut out or anything, I pulled in and cut the engine once I realised what I had done. Any idea how much damage I may have done? My huband reckons I should be OK as very little petrol would have reached the fuel pump. I am very worried, my car is practically new. Any mechanics out there?

you should be ok, you'll need to get the tank drained and the fuel lines cleaned out. on modern diesels you could damage the injectors but I doubt this is the case here.

Best not to bring it to the main dealer either as this incident could go against you down the line if the car develops any unrelated or related fuel system/injection faults

What make/model/engine size/year is the car..??
Common rail diesels don't like petrol...the tank will need to be drained
fuel feed/return pipes blown out replace fuel filter fill up with diesel and fingers crossed it will be ok...:)...I would get it to a garage without starting
    it if i was you..:)
    Best of luck.
    Ron.

Do not drive anymore on petrol!

Check my thread from when I filled with petrol but drained (actually pumped) the tank there and then in the petrol station...

Like their other products in this area, an absolute rip off at 234 Euro, with the usual scaremongering that can be expected from the AA, claiming that a manufacturer would recommend the replacement of parts up to a value of 2,000 Euro...

Got tank, fuel lines and fuel pump drained and flushed through with diesel. Car is going OK, a little sluggish and slightly noisier than previously at 1.5-2K revs. Does anybody know if this will improve by topping up regularly with diesel or should I add an additive to the diesel to improve the lubrication in the engine? Or is it likely that there is more serious damage done and I should just bite the bullet and go to the main dealer?

sounds like a nice little earner, and free fuel as well.

I'd just keep driving the car. Don't take this the wrong way, but are you sure the car is noisier/slower now?

I agree. You might just be listening more thorough because you're afraid of any damage done.

If the car drives with no glitches, there's nothing wrong. If it breaks, there is nothing else you could have done, it would have happened no matter what. You have taken all the steps necessary.

Probably won't do any harm to add a double amount of dipetane http://www.dipetane.com/ to re-grease the fuel injection system.

Put petrol in my diesel a few months back and car ran a bit unevenly for a week or two , on one occasion it got very smokey and I thought it was going to stop. You can get a tin of fuel additive that helps it to burn fuel better. Anyway after two weeks car was fine and thankfully have had no problem since,:D

Yeah, it is definitely a bit noisier & a little sluggish. I'll get that dipetane stuff tomorrow in Cork and see how I go. Thanks for the replies, very helpful.

diesel filter change might be a good idea too if you have not had it done all ready.
