Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi there

In all of the discussions over the new Terms of Use and how it relates to your rights as a photographer, the Boards.ie blog came to "light" for those unaware of it. I had posted about it here in June last.

Now, the blog is an initiative, started by me a few months ago, to communicate with the "outside world" as much as internally about what's happening on Boards.ie, with the company and then some of the great stuff that people share on the site - kind of a "here's why you should join or stuff you may have missed" feature - with over 1,300 forums now, it can be very difficult for anyone to see everything.

One of the things that I would like to do is to be able to feature photos from the Photography forum. They would be linked to the thread I had taken them from and with the photographers Boards.ie username. If the photo was taken from Pix.ie or Flickr, it would itself be linked back to the original page the photo was on.
    • Firstly: permission will be asked by PM from the photographers themselves. If they say no, there's no problem. The photographer retains full rights etc. It's merely to highlight the quality of their work.
    • Secondly: if they request it be taken down at any stage, we will do so.
    • Thirdly: it would be for the blog to promote the photography forum (or, for example, the Photography yearbook) and not used elsewhere without additional written permission of the photographer - *unless* it was a screenshot of the blog (or the forum) that we used in a presentation or was supplied to a newspaper for use in one of their articles (though there's nothing to stop them taking that themselves).
    • Finally - one exception might be where a competition is run or a specific thread asking for photos for the blog (e.g this one) where part of the entry conditions would be that the photos may be used on the blog. Again, all credit and ownership would remain with you, I might put the blog post up first and then PM you that it's there. We would make this very clear from the start.
Now, unfortunately, due in part to the template we're using, the best method I would have of doing this is saving the original file from Pix.ie/Flickr/Wherever, resizing it to fit the blog and then uploading it to the blog. What I might do is get people to send me the image they resize themselves in that situation, so the photographer is happy with it.

How does that sound to you? What am I missing there telling you? What more would you need to know? Happy to hear from you.

    Thanks

    Darragh

sounds good. promote the forum, promote the photographer.

One suggestion - Always ensure attribution is offered unless the photographer requests to not be attributed  or agrees to not be attributed if it was specifically required for a particular purpose.

I'd think it would be good to have this included too.

I think photographers here will respond favourably on the basis of experience i've had with our photo's of the week. Not one single photographer has refused (or even had to give it a second thought) to grant permission for boards to use the image on the blog. But I never took this as a given, it was always asked of the weeks winner.

Noted: that previous blog inclusions (non photo of the week stuff) have always attributed the photographers from what I can see so I trust it is an omission rather than an intention :)

Sounds like a great win win to me, best of luck with it. Just had a look at the blog , very cool. The stats section was very interesting.

Person being featured keeps control of the photo so seems fine to me

Sounds good Darragh. I think it adresses most peoples concerns regarding the blog (which I never knew existed). Get the other issue sorted and we'll be flying again!

Sounds fine alright but I think the original issues from the feedback thread arose because people fear that boards.ie LTD will own the content submitted (regardless of whether or not it's a hotlink from flickr/pix/etc.). Fine when the current bunch in charge promise not to do anything, but if future owners of boards roll in and use photos for their own devious purposes (the example I gave was daft using pics from photogs here to advertise property areas or something akin to that) it gets murky.

But this blog stuff all sounds good and dandy :)

Sounds fine to me Daragh. I've missed some of the boiling points over the last week, but you seem to have things in hand after a shakey start.

    Well done and thanks.
