    Clueless First year here..

Can someone please tell me how the GPA works?

In first semester - I did 4 core modules, and 2 electives.

I am almost positive I failed one of the modules - what happens with the GPA - how do I work it out when I get my results?

    Thanks

So first year doesn't count towards your overall GPA for your degree? (i.e. average GPA for the 3/4 etc., years of your degree)

It does but its a weighted average. For instance, my first year is worth 10%, second year is 20% and third year is 70%

If it was all the same you could do brilliantly in 1st year and pass everything for the next few years, and if the maths work, you'd be in the Class Honour's range.

Just wait until the June of your final year and you'll find out how you've done. Such a complicated system, the old way was nice and vague and tbh employers or postgrad coordinators don't give a shit or understand the UCD gpa shite, so you'll still end up going with the 2.1 or 1.1 stuff.

    *sigh*

It depends on what course you are doing.

In science it is 100% final year, were you have to obtain a GPA of over 2.48 in third year to progress into final year.

In most Arts in it a 30/70 split I think and the same of law, but I could be wrong on that.

    As for 1.1, 2.1 and 2.2's

A GPA greater or equal to 3.68 is a First Class Honours
3.08 to 3.67 is a Second Class Honours, Grade 1
2.49 to 2.07 is a Second Class Honours, Grade 2
    From 2.00 to 2.47 is a Pass

what about 2.49-3.08? big enough gap there.

I'm hovering around these forums and ITT is saying GPA>3.25 is a 1:1

ITT is irrelevant to UCD. A 1.1 in UCD is a GPA greater or equal to 3.68.

So different colleges have different gpa's for different grades of degrees.

    Thats ridiculous.

IrishKnight made a tiny typo, it's actually this -

    GPA 3.68-4.20 = First Class Honours = 1:1
GPA 3.08-3.67 = Second Class Honours, Grade One = 2:1
GPA 2.48-3.07 = Second Class Honours, Grade Two = 2:2
    GPA 2.00-2.47 = Pass

As far as I know, UCD is unusual in that our GPA system goes up to 4.2.
The other colleges might go up to 4.0 or something else. So if you seemingly need a lower GPA, it works out being the same, % wise.

Jayzus, first year better not count towards my degree!! How do I find this out? Studying Economics through Arts (I think) it's a BA and I'm based in Newman.

And if it's just over 2 years, is 2nd year now worth 50% or 30%? (didn't it used to be 30 and is now 50?)

BA is weighted 50% second year, 50% third year now. (Previously, it had had 70:30).
