I'm filling out my cao fom now and thinking of putting maynooth down for my 1st choice. The course is Business and Management. My second choice is the same course in DIT, which college do you think is better? What's the social/nightlife like in Maynooth? And the dorm rooms?
As I said the course is only 16 hours a week (could anyone doing the course please confirm this?) but I really want to stay on campus, is it just a waste of time and money to stay? What do you do when your not at lectures? (I live about 40mins away so i'd get the bus every day if I'm not staying!)

Now which do you think people on the nui maynooth would say is better:pac:
There's loads to do at night and there's every kind of club/society going so you won't be bored by any means, when not in lectures I find mooching around is the usual way to pass the time(I kid I kid, study :P).

have a read of this thread:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055637976

might give you some of the answers you're looking for. As for staying on campus/renting a room etc being a waste of money, I'd see living away from home as one of the better experiences of college. also, 16 hours a week is just lectures and tutorials, thats not study time or project work and those 16 hours can be very very spread out depending on your timetable (I had lecture at 9am monday and the next lecture at 3pm... my first lecture on a friday was 10am with the last tutorial being at 4pm... for most of the year there was nothing in between those times on the monday or friday so at least living in maynooth I could go home instead of the pub or canteen.. oh or library of course...)

Thanks! :D But would you be bored just wandering around? Whats the college like in general? Are you glad you picked there to go? And is it a good place to meet new people or is it too big?

Ah no the trick is to wander around in groups :D college is grand, definitely glad I picked it and it's a great place to meet people, maynooths a friendly place and the college isn't big, the distance between the buildings is big though :pac:

i do business and management here and those lecture hours may seem small but by the time you fit in assignments, study and socialising you will be very very busy!!!! i love maynooth and i would imagine it to be a much better college then dit so i def think you should come here :) oh and id love to live on campus..seems like so much fun!!! 40 mins isnt far to commute in the mornings but with all the taxi fares you would have to pay home after nights out it would prob be more economical and much more fun to live on campus!!!

I didn't really know what I wanted to do so I put it down because I thought business would be pretty general with a bit of everything in it! I dropped out of accounting 2 weeks into it in 5th though and changed to biology, is accounting a big part of the course? If I don't get 410 points I'm hopeing to get in through arts at 375 and then transfer into business and management in 2nd yr...

    whats the social life like

Bloody great. I'm a commuter (Palmerstown, West Dublin represen') but Maynooth is so small you will have befriended a good 10 sheepshaggers in a week and thus have access to a world of free couches. Last year I got so ballsy about this arrangement I always had a towel and change of clothes with me :D Maynooth is commuter-friendly.
Is it just a waste of time and money to stay?

I can't quite place where you live, if its 40 minutes into town then I'd say yep. Nightlife in Maynooth is bloody great but stops early enough too. A bus leaves Maynooth about 12.15PM weeknights, to be honest you get as much bang for your buck with that in my mind if you're only out for pints.

I was managing to go out twice a week in Maynooth (one night home on the last bus, one night staying out) and living at home, thus saving a fortune.
What do you do when your not at lectures?

Library, computer rooms, cafes down the down, if I've LOADS of time (4 hours like) Liffey Valley or even home to pick up the assignment I've forgotton. You can hammer out any assignments you've been given with a 3 hour break, or you can drink €3 pints in the bar and miss the next class anyway. It's a fun life out in Maynooth.

yea it is a very general course, with a little bit of everything so it doesnt really go into too much detail with any one subject.. this year is the first time ive had an accounting subject and its really only basic accounting, like the accounting you would do as part of business for the junior cert!

Sounds cool, I'm praying now for the points to get in! The college sounds awesome! :D

I'm in 2nd year in that course. Absolutley love it. The economics part is tough enough but you'll scrape through (sure isn't that all us college students hope for) and the rest of the subjects are common sense if you have half a brain.
As for living in Maynooth, I kind of regret not living on campus but it's quite expensive. You'll find places around the village handy enough. As for living 40 minutes away, lots of my friends do, in fact 90% still live at home and they find it grand. And as PrivateEye already said, you'll find loads of gob****es like me willing to give you a couch for the night.....or you could just hook up ;)

Maynooth is quite well known for it's friendly social mood, though I can't speak for DIT I do know some peopel who've been to various Universities and IT's and often commented that what makes Maynooth special is the people you meet here, and the friendly atmosphere.

    Good luck with your application!:)

You're asking Maynooth students which institution is better?
Well not to rub it in but we are a UNIVERSITY :D .

Nightlife is great. 16 hours a wekk usually transcends to double that. You are only factoring in lecture time tbf. You also need to consider reading and writing to get your real hours. For example I only have 11 hours of lectures a week, but do at least 35 hours. Though I am a final year student. when you're not at lectures you have fun, read and work. Third level is a whole different kettle of fish to secondary school. You'll learn fast grasshopper you'll learn fast.

Did that course and loved it.Maynooth is a great place to go to college as it's so easy to meet new people and the commute is not a problem. As a previous poster said your lecture hours do not factor in the actual hours required to get through the course.
