Central Heating Woes

    Hi Guys,

My apartment has an S-plan heating system which is currently suffering from a few difficulties. I have recently moved into this apartment and I reckon that the rads have never even been beld. The system is air locked but bleading the rads has not aliviated the problem. Some rads are so bad that they dont even heat up and when I open the vent nothing, not even air comes out.

As well as this if the boiler and Hot Water are on at the same time the boiler will cut out before the HW has heated.

Please help this cold weather is killing us!

    Thanks guys

Sounds like the system is low on water. Is the heating system filled from the mains, or from a tank in the attic? If it's mains fed there will be a valve or a filling loop somewhere for pressurising the system. It may be near the boiler, in the hot press, or somewhere else altogether. There may be a pressure gauge close to it. You need to have around 0.5 to 1.0 bar pressure in the system before you vent any radiators. There should be a pressure guage on the boiler. With the boiler off and cold, vent one radiator at a time and then check the pressure. Top it back up to around 1 bar and vent the next radiator. Repeat until all rads are vented and there is about 1 bar in the system.

If it's fed from an attic tank, make sure there is water in the tank, and that all valves in the filling line are open. There will often be a non return valve which may stick, so make sure it is passing water too. The pressure reading will be lower in this case, and you cannot increase it, but the guage should not read zero.

ALso check all room thermostats are turned up and motorised valves are opening as required. Best of luck. Post up a few pictures of the piping in the hot press and the boiler areas if you still have issues and we'll try to help.
