Theres two things you can try yourself.
    1 Change the fuel filter.
2 Add Diptaine, its great for bring down emissions.
You might get thru on thoses.

Redex is quite good think STP make another one.
Diptaine i've used myself and found it very good
on a few different cars. Petrol or diesel.

I could be way wrong, but I'd be thinking of giving it a good, sustained revving for 10 minutes driving before going the additive route. That's from me two-stroke days. Can't do that with the roads ice, though...

Does it have one of them hi-faluttin' particulate filters?

Most diesels will let out a puff of smoke/sut under harsh acceleration. It's not remapped is it?

I used a fuel additive for mine ~ a week before the nct, then gave it a very hard run half an hour before the test. The brought the emissions down dramatically (from what it failed on the week before).

I'd be using the additivive, giving it a good run before the test and then try to arrive fairly bang on the time that she is to be tested so it's not idling too long for the build up to happen again.
