We have no snow what so ever in athlone during this cold snap. I'd love some.
What are the chances for snow today?

    Hopefully on its way

Take a look at this forecast for 1pm. Not sure if Athlone is under that blue blob or not. Geography not my strong point.:)

Sky is bright here again in UCD - think the snow is taking a nap for a while.

    Kilkenny City outskirts...

    Temperature: -6.3 °C
    Dew Point: -6.6 °C

Woke to a fresh covering of snow. Not much, but enough to cover the tracks from the day before. Is still snowing, but ranging from very light to medium but steadily falling.
Temperature reached a low of -11.1, which is .3 of a degree lower than last night.
The mains water and all taps on the border of the house have frozen. Only the ensuite in the middle of the house is working. Guess that small difference in temp has made a difference. Although we checked with one of the neighbours and they have water. :(

any really big snow fall I have seen in these islands has mostly come unnanounced. ;)

100 pc agree snow ghost. I will take marginal conditions for snow anytime when there is an intense system moving in. Intensity will override marginal conditions to produce snow very often.

I reckon the SW will see the biggest dumping tomorrow night.

Clouds now moving over me, they look very dark as well? Will we see any snow you think? Reckon there is a chance the west may see some? Still -6.8c here, but expecting that to rise now the clouds arriving!

Clouds are not so dark here with plenty of breaks, just the usual lower mid level Sc's. One or 2 small fall streaks though which do look quite stunning over the frozen landscape. Always a chance a flurry or 2 will drift over as far as here but well scattered, if at all, I reckon.

Seems to me the only accurate predictions for snow have come about 5-6 hours before the event.

Starting to believe long-range forcasting for specific parts of the country is at best highly unreliable best guesses.

Won't stop me from living in these threads until spring though.

    :)

Don't mind that. I've had 3-4C everyday. The air over the Irish sea has been in the 3-6C range and this gets blown by the easterly to my site which is 1 mile inland. Places further inland don't get, or at least see far less moderating of temperatures by the Irish Sea

-11 in Limerick earlier this morning... never seen temps so low...

back to -8 at the minute but everywhere seems to be dry & crisp.

Lucky we haven't had any snow so far!

There'll be very little thaw on ground, but yes once temperatures rise above zero, a thaw will occur on plants and other surfacesabove the ground and in the sun.

Started here again in Kilkenny/Tipp border. Jesus, the poor outdoor animals, not just the cattle and abandoned horses, but there are dogs living outdoors all over this country.

    WTF

Dude, don't you know that round these here parts that'd be considered a verynegative statement.

Those Dubs have all the luck. Bring it on, looking forward to drifting snow, but know I'm not going to get it :(
