Motoring query Audi A4

I need some advice regarding work carried out on a 2005 Audi A4 2.0Tdi. The work was carried out by an Audi garage and involved fitting a new timing belt. When fitting a new timing belt they also fitted a new water pump which is standard procedure for Audi as it is easier to access the pump when the timing belt has been removed. My query is - when changing the water pump is it necessary to change the coolant also, when I looked at the bill I noted that they had used 60 litres of coolant, that is a serious amount of coolant (and also pretty expensive) and am wondering does an Audi A4 2.0Tdi require that amount of coolant.
