Going to assume you mean embryonic stem-cell research as being the controversial one here (as I generally find that most people are ok with adult stem-cell reseach), and ask specifically:

Why are you in favour of it?

What do you think of the other side's counter-arguments?

(For the record, I am most definitely pro embryonic stem-cell research, with a few provisions. But I have to ask about it because it's probably technically my own "most un-PC" opinion, even though I don't see why it should be controversial..!)

From a utilitarian point of view (and that's not a perspective I often adopt), it makes a lot more sense to find a productive use for the materials, for example, left over from termination procedures. [as for abortion, that's a completely different issue, and not one I'm going to try discussing in this forum] While some of the early claims on the potential benefits of stem-cell therapies were probably a bit closer to fantasy than possible reality, I still believe the research does offer a lot of hope for future treatments. And if it can help alleviate the suffering of many in the future, then I think it's worth making use of such materials as would otherwise simply be incinerated.

As an agnostic and borderline atheist, I have no time at all for the any religious counter-arguments.
Without getting into the abortion debate, I do not believe stem-cell research encourages terminations. For me, testing of cells from foetuses would merely be silver lining on an otherwise dreadful cloud.
The "adult cells" argument is interesting, but I'd prefer to see it as complementing embryonic research rather than as an absolute alternative.

If that doesn't change the tone of this thread, I don't know what will!

Wow this topic filled up with questions quickly, I don't have time to go over them all ... slow down, you people!

    Who's your favourite Bond?

What would you do if I registered a new account as An File?
Then another one as An Fhile?

I've actually been wondering about that for a while.

The easy answer would be Connery, but Daniel Craig started pretty well so he could be one to watch for the future.

    I mean, George Lazenby!

I'd be fairly pissed off if someone took "An File", but I'd get over it. There are plenty of other poetic phrases out there in plenty of other languages. I'm fairly sure Boards already has a Bard, The Bard and bard.

As for An Fhile? I'd laugh at anyone for making the same mistake I did! :D The only way I can imagine that name being taken is if someone who knows me registers it as a prank.

    Question Time:

Do you use alot of hair products?

Do you mostly wear runners/trainers or shoes?

Did you use to have a favourite teddy bear and what was its name?

Do you ever socialise in Galway? If so favourite bar?

Do you own a pair of slippers?

When in college, did you wear your school bag on one shoulder or the recommended two shoulders?

I have a bottle of wet-look gel that I use for nights out, that's about it (besides shampoo, obviously)

50/50 between Vans and runners. I wear black shoes when I have to for college/work though.

I never named my current favourite teddy, but I've only had it since I was 17 :o All my childhood ones are still in the house somewhere, they all have names.

One night in Galway: Blue Note and The Róisín Dubh. Amazing experience, looking to do the same again soon.

I still wear my bag over one shoulder

(That book sounds cool by the way :) )

    Nope, not a satchel :p

Many things, some more or less important/relevant/useful than others.

I think I was 16 when I joined Teenireland. Don't remember any forums before that.

Sorry, meant to get back to this one!

My first reaction was North Korea, but only because of the "nuclear threat" they've always been linked with. Problem is, I know nothing about the real lives of the people there, or what the countryside looks like, or what folk culture still lingers, so I'd feel guilty for removing the whole country. If you know what I mean.

Do you write with your left or right hand?

When you cross your legs do you cross with your left or right first?

Do you like the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins?

If the answer is no....why the feic don't you?

Have you ever let a girlfriend put make up on you for the craic?

Salt and Vinegar or Cheese and Onion Pringles?

    My way with words
My body (apart from the usual post-Christmas binge guilt :o )
    My taste in music

    The right one.

My left leg is on top of my right leg at the moment, but I'll switch them around when that gets uncomfortable.

I've only read 3 or 4 poems by Hopkins, and I've liked those :)

    <_<

    >_>

    Maybe...

Cheese and Onion Pringles, they're fantastic. Salt & Vinegar is the devil!

Name one thing you don't like about yourself?

Fair City or Ros Na Run?(you have to pick one)

Do you like the smell of brand new books/refil pads?

I have an awful tendancy to procrastinate. Doing everything at the last minute gets stressful :(

I've never watched an episode of Ros Na Run, but there's no way it could be worse than Fair City (which would stand out as an atrocity on most channels, but nestles happily in the abyss that is RTÉ television...)

The smell is alright, but the feeling of crisp, clean pages is much cooler! :D

I don't really believe in the idea of soulmates, but if such a thing exists then no, I have not met mine yet.

    Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill :P

Cadbury's (but there are FAR better kinds of chocolate out there)

    Drink: yes. Smoke: absolutely never.

    Hitler actually existed, so...

Stone Cutters episode was the first one that I thought of, but if I thought about it properly I'd never be able to choose just one.

He did some great versions of a few blues, swing and big-band songs, but his poppy stuff doesn't appeal to me so much. :)
