I just got a set of BFG ATs and have to say despite my initial scepticism they are fine on the road. They sound like thunder for the first few miles while you scrub the new off them, but once they settle down they just get on with it.

Eventhough I drive a defender I have a heavy foot and drive flat out a lot of the time and I find the limits of grip and traction on tyres very quickly, especially in the wet. I have had no problems.

However, any all-terrain tyre that is more than 70% worn is going to make the hair stand up on the back of your neck in the wet. Its the nature of the beast. If yours are so low they need replacing for test then they are well past their best for road use in the wet.

You won't get AT2s here easily. I got a quote of €200 each. Camskills are the best price I could find to import, but then you have to fit them.

I went for the BFGs. I haven't regretted it.

Got mine in the Landrover place at Saintfield. They don't fit tyres but were very obliging about arranging that to be done locally. I think a bit noisy at 60+mph. I wanted BFG A/Ts at the time but they couldn't be got anyplace then (earlier this year)

Can I wrack a few brains here & see if you can identify a part I need to order for our series III?
Its a bolt to connect the wings to the bulk head, it is a slide in clip bolt if that makes sense?

Also, I ordered parabolics & shocks for it, but when checking them against the current rolling chassis stage that its at, it looks like the shocks are a good 3" too short.
I had specified that I wanted longer ones, but the place I'm dealing with said the only longer one's they stock are £100 dearer!
(I paid £56 for front and rear shocks, the procomp/longer one's are £155)

Would this be the norm? I'd expect another €10-20 per shock for longer ones but not that much extra!
Is there anywhere cheaper either here or in the UK selling the longer shocks?

When we got the General Grabbers I was able to pick up a set of 5 on steel wheels for £200 on ebay. about 5k of use on them, bargain at that!
They definitely are that bit noisier but a lovely grippy tyre, rock solid hold with them.

Standard shocks will work provided you have check straps fitted otherwise you risk rippping the eyes out. There are plenty of alternatives to the pro-comps, Terrafirma are popular here. With the cost of the shocks, you are always going to pay 2-3 times the price for longer ones, standard ones are ridiculously cheap.

LR series list the ACME bolts and spire nuts, most places will stock them. http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/2648/AM605061-ACME-BOLT-OUTER-WING-TO-BULKHEAD.html?search=wing%20bolt&page=1

Ugh, damn turbo went on my 08. Only 75,000 km on the clock and will cost at least €1200 to fix.
Anyone else experience this? Im like a wasp :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭Slidey

Did you price the turbo in other places?

Labour shouldn't be over the top, there appears to be a good bit of room around it

Yeah, the best is about £550 Sterling and maybe €300 labour. Still a bit pissed off that a turbo would go on such a new(ish) engine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

Is that the Puma transit engine? No idea if they have a history of turbos going.

    Yeah, its the Puma.

Ahh its not a bid deal, only that im a bit worried about what else what might go. Im looking into it more with the garage and the makers of those turbos give a 4 year guarantee. Out of guarantee with Land Rover though but might be able to get some of the costs covered.

It does seem like a lot of labour.

How many hours are they charging for? They must be planning on taking out the intercooler or dropping the sump to check for debris with that much labour. Thats assuming they can't be charging much more than £50/hr

Thats a quote from the Land Rover Garage, ill get a few "country prices" later in the week. I am still hoping Land Rover might be able to swing something fro me with its guarantee/HQ. He said he might have a chance considering it has a LR service history and that the Turbo was obviously faulty to begin with.

Thanks a million Sean, you're a star! I was googling different variations of bolt but didn't come across the one's you listed, that's exactly what is needed for the job :)
Thanks also for the heads up on the check straps, the existing one's are fairly worn.
The guy from the place I bought the shocks rang today to tell me that when the body & engine is put back on the chassis that it'll lower the body sufficiently to bridge the gap between the shocks & springs.
I'd sooner go for the belts & brace approach and get the check straps to be sure!

Caoimhín, that sounds like the typical inflated labour I've experience from LR.
I had a freelander a few years ago with the infamous head gasket issue. Local place quoted me €1000 to repair! I was nearly floored hearing the quote.
Thankfully my other half was able to replace it, I think it was €180 for the head gasket kit & €100 odd for a local specialist to machine the head.
Can not get over the cost of their labour at all.

Fingers crossed you will be covered for the part under warranty or at the very least get the labour a lot cheaper elsewhere.

Hi All, I have new Defender 110 bought earlier this year. Its due it's first service shortly and am looking for someone to recommend on where to purchase the parts? Its the Ford 2.5 engine in it I rang the garage where i bought it and was quoted €380 for parts and labour  Am i right in thinking I should just contact the local Ford garage for the parts and throw them in myself. Thanks in advance

Price them on line first Paddocks,Crozier 4x4, their are loads more places just type Defender into your search and get genuine filters not britpart.
They have a 2.4 engine by the way.

Thanks O.A.P just got them off Paddocks for £32.50 :D I don't know how the dealers can sleep at night. He said he was looking after me at €380 aswell the chancer.

That's any warranty gone then, especially if the filters come in blue boxes! It will probably want synthetic oil as well rather than a bog standard 10/40 diesel oil.

For a first service at a franchised dealer that's a normal sort of price plus you get the book stamped, fault codes read and warranty issues dealt with. Don't know if you are keeping it long term but no service history will affect the value.

What do you guys think? Not commercial I bet. I like this and the price:D

Was actually thinking of 10 years older for tax and NTC exemption. Maybe out of the UK.

I know little about the price of Defenders but I think that is waaaay to cheap for one

good spot that, might explain the price.

Going by the picture, that's not what's for sale. The pic is of a new late model Td5 with aircon so is post 02. 1990 could be a complete heap with a realistic price.

90/110 aren't yet classics, earliest 110s are 1983. I'll educate you at great length txpjl next time I see you in the pub and maybe try and sell you a series 3 ;)

Good move, that's the type of tyre's I have on mine.
You got yourself a good buy on them!

I paid about £450 for 5 brand new grabbers up in Scotland for mine!

The Defender reprieve is good news too!

Probably easier and cheaper to get some made. I had some made up from steel angle with a length of M8 stud welded to it
