looking forwar to tomorrows racing ,
    thanks pyro true gent

You can say that again Basq, pity there's days like this. Thanks PB, getting the market right is a big plus, getting horses running like that is not! Tomorrow's another day and I'll do my best to get a few winners.

Poor day though, I'd love to shoot Spencer for holding horses so far back in 5 furlong sprints.

    Bank - 389.76pts (+289.76pts)

I'm off to study tomorrows cards for a good while now. Talk to ya'll later while I wallow in self pity!

  • Moderators Posts: 8,719 ✭✭✭x PyRo

One selection so far, easy decision as he owes me nothing but he has huge claims once again, in my opinion. I'm not sure that price will last too long either. He's also getting his soft ground which he will love.

Reasoning later but I think you all know what I've posted about this horse before! Not much different now.

    3:55 York - Poet's Place - 3pts @ 7/1 (VC)

Back with more later, that one was an easy selection!

  • Moderators Posts: 8,719 ✭✭✭x PyRo

And another on what looks likely to be a busy day for me. It's a Barron horse again (previous selection too) and one who I think will enjoy soft ground plus the step up in trip and I can't see 12/1 being around for too long.

    3:40 Ascot - Sirvino - 1pt e/w @ 12/1 (Ladbrokes)

    Reasoning to come.

Still 13/2 with pp's for anyone who has'nt done it.

Im finished with Oldjoesaid l will end up following it off a cliff.
It alaways looks like the horse finishes with plenty of petrol in the tank when Spencer rides him (Im finished with him aswell).

Although I can see OJS poping up at lingfield on the aw the way some of those 5f races are run it woild suit him.

One last thing I wonder will S De Souza pick up a job at one of the top yards he is one of the better jockeys in the weighing room and very under rated imo.l know ur a fan of him pyro.

  • Moderators Posts: 8,719 ✭✭✭x PyRo

I'm sticking with OJS, he's bound to repay me some day at a nice price. He has so much ability but hasn't got a chance to show it, Spencer's to blame for those races he was on him, although today he slightly missed the kick and had an awful passage through. I would avoid Spencer but he made me fortunes on the AW last winter just backing him blind for certain trainers, I'll be doing the same this winter. He is brilliant at riding from the front on the all weather, pity he couldn't give Oldjoesaid a good ride once in a while.

De Sousa is amazing in my opinion, he's so strong in a finish and wonderful when doing low weights especially. I reckon he'll get a top job somewhere in the next couple of years, no idea where but he certainly should and hopefully will do. He says he's happy up north with his wife and young kids so it mightn't happen for a while yet. He seems a nice guy so hopefully he doesn't miss his chance. Pure talent though and a wonderful rider, done me many a good turn too which is nicer!

Cheers LM, hopefully we all get lucky tomorrow. :)

First selection as posted earlier, fingers crossed.

    3:40 Ascot - Sirvino - 1pt e/w @ 12/1 (Ladbrokes)

Highly progressive 5 year old in 2009, winning 5 of 6 starts including the John Smith's Cup. Went from a mark of 65 to a high of 101 which is astounding progression. Has had 4 runs this season, a decent run in a Listed event and came 6th out of 18 at York off top weight 2 starts ago. Didn't get the best of runs through that day and should be more suited to the Ascot track here, also handles any ground, so no problems with the slower ground and he struck me as one who may just appreciate it. He ran very poorly on his penultimate start at Doncaster and was dropped 6lbs by the handicapper which helped him improve to run a gallant race last time out at Pontefract where he stayed on very well to come 2nd over 10f on a very stamina sapping track. He's up 2lbs for that run but still only 3lbs higher than when winning the John Smith's Cup. I'm interested in seeing him run on a right handed galloping and testing track, he has ran on left handed tracks all year and despite having won when going left handed last year he always struck me as one who does better going the other way, especially with an extra 2 furlongs here for the first time. I think the track is ideal for his running style and he's being stepped up to 12 furlongs which based on is run last time out is exactly what's needed.

He's lightly raced with only 14 career runs which is nothing considering he's five years old and he has won on 5 of those occasions. He should get a race run to suit and with Tom Eaves on board he has a very capable jockey on top. Eaves doesn't ride for David Barron too often but he has won on 12 out of 58 rides giving him a highly impressive 20% strike rate and a profit to level stakes, he's a very underrated jockey in my opinion and despite it being his first time aboard this fellow he will hopefully know how to get the best out of him. Barron's yard is in grand knick in the past few weeks with 20% of their runners winning and I reckon he will be expecting to knock out a big prize out of this fellow here at a track that he doesn't visit too frequently and this is the only one he sends here on Saturday. He doesn't do well at the track with an average enough strike rate of 7% but he shows a profit to level stakes when coming here, although it's skewed by a 40/1 winner in 2001. The soft ground is something Sirvino hasn't encountered yet this season and although he has a fine record on very fast ground he always struck me as one who'd enjoy some cut, his record suggests he would too. His first 2 races were on GS and Soft and were 2 respectable 4th placed finished in race he wouldn't of been out to win I'd imagine, to ensure a lower handicap mark. He also came 2nd in his first Handicap on GS over a mile which is a trip too stiff for him and he won on Good to Soft over 1m 2f at Ripon off a mark of 78. He has improved massively since then without encountering the soft ground but seemed to enjoy it that day and despite being hampered and his jockey losing his whip he still managed to get up to win, the extra 2f should help here too as he has that perfect mixture of stamina and speed, with some luck in running and gaps opening at the right time he shouldn't be too far away in what will be a contest where the horse who stays on the best wins, Sirvino fits that bill for me. 12/1 is far too big a price for this fellow, he was 5/1 favourite in my book and I expect he'll go off shorter tomorrow with conditions to suit. He's worth a small each way bet and no more because it's a very tough race overall but one which should be run to suit him, he's tactically versatile and should appreciate the likely strong gallop. I just hope he's out to try and show his abilities as he is the best horse in the race, in my opinion.

Similar write up to last time, and the time before!

    3:55 York - Poet's Place - 3pts @ 7/1 (VC)

Lightly raced and highly progressive 5 year old who didn't see a race track until November '09 when he raced and won at Southwell winning by 4 lengths, he then won again at Southwell over 6f winning by the same margin again off a mark of 75. He had a 4 month break before return at Doncaster running off 87, looked a big threat but faded in the final furlong to come a close 5th with 3 of the 4 horses ahead of him winning since that race. He finished 4.5l behind Johnny Mudball next time out on rapidly fast ground which suited the Dascombe horse and didn't suit my selection at all. He was well clear of the rest of the field. Ran no race in a big Heritage Handicap after that coming 12th on rapid ground again and over 7f which doesn't suit at all.

The form of his next run and his last race is what I'm extremely impressed by, he absolutely trounced a very competitive field in a class 3 handicap at Haydock Park. He absolutely relished the softer ground that day and beat the highly progressive and soft ground specialist Harry Patch who has since won at Yarmouth beating a good horse in Mac's Power quite easily. Dimika (3rd) came out of that race and won in a 17 runner Heritage Handicap at Ripon on soft ground, the 6th place, Baby Strange came out and won at this course over 6f in a 19 runner field. The 9th place horse, Fathsta, won since and even the 14th placed horse, Definightly, came out and won on slower ground since too. The form of that race is rock solid and he won eased down and at a canter. Poet's Place was raised 10lbs for the run and it's more than fair in my opinion and there's a lot more to come from this fellow.

He went on to run in the Portland at Doncaster over 5f & 140yards, he was slowly into stride that day but made rapid headway through the field in the last couple of furlongs and got up in the final 50 yards to win going away from the rest, he proved that day that he handles relatively quick ground, today he will be getting slower ground though, which is absolutely perfect for him. What impressed me was his turn of foot and how quickly he swallowed up the 2nd placed horse, Bajan Tryst, and started to pull away from him to win by half a length. He was 2l ahead of anything else and really showed the ability that he had, he looked in trouble at one stage and hit 100.0 in running but his undoubted class told in the end and there's still more to come from him in my opinion.

He's trained by my favourite trainer, David Barron, who certainly knows how to treat a horse and gets the best out of them. He has been patient with this fellow and it's coming to fruition now. He's extremely lightly raced with only 8 career starts (4 wins) and has a lot more to come, I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a good Group race in the coming year or so. He has so much speed and cruises through his races to perfection. The extra half a furlong will suit him ideally and it's exactly what he needs, he's up 6lbs for his Portland win but I'm not sure that'll be enough to stop him and although he failed to be the first horse since Lochsong to win the Portland/Ayr Gold Cup double he has valid excuses to why he didn't perform there. The ground being one, it was slightly on the fast side for him in my opinion and the opinion of many others. The draw wasn't kind to him either with Poet's Place left with stall 12, it ended up being one of the worst places to be despite me thinking otherwise. No horse had ever won the race from a middle stall. He also slightly missed the break and ended up in rear, only managing to finish 6th of 16 in his group. He was in the group that was running on the slow part of the track and ended up just 5.5l behind Redford who has won since and could win again today in his race. That wasn't a bad run all things considered and I fully expect him to bounce back here.

The Barron horse may end up being held up to run on late which worked last time out but it will be harder to maneuver him into position in a big field but if the gaps appear at the right time he certainly has the turn of foot to cause a lot of bother to the opposing horses here and I believe that he's the best horse in the race by some way, he's open to a lot of improvement too and a mark of 102 is in no way beyond him. The only thing I can't figure out is what tactics will be used but I'm assuming he'll be held up on the back of a strong pace and hopefully the gaps open at the right time. He's great with these highly progressive horses like he had with Sirvino in '09. I think Poet's Place can take this in his stride and hopefully go on to better things next season. Everything is in his favour today, draw, ground and a race that will be run to suit. Despite this being a big 20 runner field it's a much easier assignment than the Ayr Gold Cup and if he runs to ability I think he'll win and I'm sure he is the best horse in the race, if he turns up is another question but there is no reason why he shouldn't. He was also pulled out of a Group 2 not long ago in preference to run in this. Colonel Mak, also from the Barron yard, is the big danger. He won the Ayr Silver Cup, from the 'wrong' side of the track and won it easily. He is well able to go very close here but with Makin choosing to ride Poet's Place I think he's the one to be on, his love of the ground and rapid turn of foot leads me to believe that Makin has mad the right choice. 7/1 looks massive to me and based on his Portland run and everything else likely to suit I had him as the 4/1 clear favourite. He is value at his current price and the only way it won't go down is if there's significant support for some of the Fahey horses. He should run very well and I expect him to win, medium stakes at a nice price. He owes me nothing after landing a max bet previously but I think he'll be adding more to the kitty, if all goes to plan.

    2:15 York - Autumn Riches - 1pt e/w @ 20/1 (Bet365)

Well bred 3 year old who is still lightly raced having had 6 starts to day, he has already won twice over 1 mile, once when winning a maiden at Pontefract and again on his 2nd handicap start at Windsor on Good to Soft ground. He was then upped in trip to 1m 2f and didn't stay on either occasion, he's now dropped back to a mile which is what he needs and with soft ground at York I'm expecting a big run. He's a typical Mark Johnston horse, puts in a poor performance then wins next time out and I'm hoping it could prove to be the same scenario here, he's got a lot of speed and proved his stamina when winning at the testing Pontefract track over 1 mile on quick ground. He's a son of Pivotal so I'd assume that's where he gets his speed from, he's out of an unraced Dubai Millennium mare and her sire won 2 Group 1's on testing ground over 1 mile. My selection is obviously nowhere up to that standard but he certainly has enough ability to relish these conditions today and bounce back to form back over what is the perfect distance for him. He is taking a step up in class here but I feel a mark of 87 is not beyond him and with Adrian Nicholls on board doing a lightweight 8st 8lbs it could just help his chances of making the frame.

Nicholls isn't the best jockey in the world by any means but he's reasonably talented, he doesn't often ride for Mark Johnston but when he does he has a decent 12% strike rate and shows a profit to level stakes, with Autumn Riches being a prominent racer I think Nicholls could be an ideal booking for him, he's good from the front and when he managed to keep the horse balanced (doesn't happen too often!) they usually run well, this is 1 of 2 rides for him today at York. He's prone to the odd big priced winner for Johnston too and the 20/1 available on this fellow is far too big. The track should suit him perfectly and Johnston usually does OK here and has a 10% strike rate, he's due a winner at the track too after not having one since July. My selection gets a 3lb weight allowance for being a 3 year old and with conditions to suit he's a very tasty price, he is a 12/1 shot in my book thus making the 20's available considerably too big. I think he'll run well off a strong gallop and could go close up against quite a number of out of form horses.

    3:05 Ascot - Mister Hughie - 1.5pts e/w @ 25/1 (Bet365)

Very speedy 3 year old who I've now backed on numerous occasions, he is usually outpaced at the back of the field then runs on very late when his stamina kicks in. He has a lot of ability but needs things to fall just right for him. I also selected him on his penultimate start at Newbury, he was hampered on a number of occasions, once at the start when scrimmaging with another horse, once again another furlong later and then he couldn't get a clear run over 1f out, had to be switched 10 yards to the right to get a run then he ran on very strongly. Only managed to come 9th of 15 but was just over 2 lengths away from the winner Astrophysical Jet, with a bit of luck that day he would of given her something to think about but he got none at all. He then ran in the Group 1 Prix De L'Abbaye at Longchamp last weekend over 5 furlongs on Soft ground. He missed the break and finished second last. Missing the break cost him any chance he had, he's dropped back into more suitable company for this Group 3 contest. At his best he'll be a big danger if he shows up, he's upped to 6f here and the way he finishes his racing I think it's needed and he has won 2 from 8 races over 6f, placing on 3 other occasions. He's certainly more consistent over this trip and I can't see extreme amounts of pace in the race so the potential slow gallop should suit Mister Hughie wonderfully. Bar the L'Abbaye last time out, he has never really encountered soft ground and that's the one concern but if he takes to it he should have a chance of out running his price tag. He certainly can cut the mustard at this level on his day as proven when coming an unlcuky 4th in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood behind Borderlescott. He was an unlucky loser that day and with a clear run he would of won. He has won at Listed level since when traveling well throughout at Beverley when beating Prohibit by a neck, he would of won by further had he not been hindered mid run, as usual.

Mister Hughie is trained by the wonderful Mick Channon who has been in decent form of late. Jimmy Fortune takes the ride and he's a highly skilled jockey and it's interesting that he's on board this fellow for the first time, he should be ideally suited to my selections hold up style and if he can find the gaps at the right time he could just cause a shock in this Group 3 contest. I think 25/1 is madness based on his Listed win and unlucky loss at Group 3 level on his penultimate start, he should relish the step up in trip and IF taking to the ground he will surely be staying on as well as any other. It just depends what Mister Hughie decides to turn up, if it's the one with the rapid turn of foot then 25's will look massive come after the race, if it's the unruly and moody colt then 25's will look about 50 times too small. All in all he's a 14/1 shot in my book and I expect a good run for him, he's worth small each way stakes and I'm hoping he shows his true abilities here. The right handed galloping & testing nature of the Ascot track should also be a major plus, as the majority of his best form is on similar tracks, I just hope he handles the ground.

All Annalena is out again in the 4:50 at Ascot, she has a big chance but I've enough stakes and I don't want to go greedy. If a few of these win I'll back her then.

15 euro each way on hughie and riches, at those odds, it's too tempting to say no.

Hopefully they do the business for us mate, I really like both of their chances but the odd compliers disagree. Hughie has ground worries but Autumn Riches has no worries, in my opinion.
