I know it's bit early but I was just looking at the odds online and there's some interesting odds being offered.

I think it always comes down to who can bag at least a couple in the group stages. Every winner back to Schillaci in 1990 has gotten at least 2 goals in the group stages.

So anybody any inklings for this years?

    Villa or Fabiano

Fabiano. Can easily see him scoring 5 or 6 goals in the group stage at least.

What kind of odds is he carrying?

People will probably think I'm mad but I'm going for an eachway bet on Crouch. He scored 4 in the qualifiers so I reckon it's worth a punt.

It's way too early. Why would you even think about it so early you don't know what will happen between now and then. Is it non-runner no bet?

I bet on Mario Gomez for the Euro 2008 Golden Boot, so I don't think I'll be throwing any money on this one. :o:p

    Better odds.

A mate just emailed be a link to the odds and I had a look.

What's your definition of "non-runner" in this case?
I'd imagine if a player is picked in the squad he'll be included as a runner. If he's left sitting at home in his mansion well then he'd be a non-runner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,587 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Gerrard and Lampard at 66/1 both look like decent bets. it'll most likely be Fabiano, though. Brazil are up against 3 defensively frail teams in the group stage, and he'll be their focal point in attack. Villa will have to compete with Torres for the goals with Spain.

Klose at 25/1 is also a decent bet. Never write off the Germans in these matters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Also as hes made it this far without being mentioned, Gary Breen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,383 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Might throw a few quid on Mesut Özil at 66/1 as an outside bet. Wouldn't go near any of the favourites.

France get kicked out and replaced by Ireland, what price Robbie? (About 10,000,000/1)

Van Persie at 25-1 is the one for me. They scored lots of goals at euros so hopefully they'll do the same. Tough group but he'll be the main man (if not injured)

    T Henry (France) 28/1:D

    I'll get my coat

Seriously though, my money would be on Fabiano

Also think Tevez at 40/1 is an alright price

    +1

    Thats good value

Hard to see past Villa if he stays fit.

Higuaín would be a good outside bet if Argentina can get their act together in time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,369 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

if Ivory Coast end up doing as well as many think they might (many labelled them dark horses in a previous thread), then Drogba has to be a decent enough bet at 20s.

Gerrard's the best at 66s though.

in reality, i really can't see past Fabiano.

i also love the way Emile Heskey, half of England's first choice strike force during the qualifiers, isn't even on the radar. says it all about the man really. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,900 ✭✭✭Eire-Dearg

10/1 on Fabiano is a great deal. I think it'll be him - he usually scores against the lesser teams, I can see him notching a few in the groups and I've a feeling Brazil will go all the way to the Final.

Defoe is also a good shout, if he plays he should score - but probably won't get enough action to see him top scorer.

Actually, that's who my mate was tipping. He's certainly capable of banging them in but I said the same as you, he just might not get the games to make it a worthwhile bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

Really you should narrow it down to 1 per team eg Rooney, Villa, Fabiano, Higuain etc. Gerrard and Lampard have absolutely no chance. Argentina, Spain and England have ridiculously easy groups and must be fancied to bang in a couple. Villa, Fabiano and Rooney are the obvious favs. If Maradona picks Higuain he would have a serious chance but this is Maradona we are talking about so it is impossible to know his team selection.

If I had to pick one it would be Fabiano but forget this market and just back Brazil @ 11-2.

Just in case, I'll quote this. You just never know for sure. I actually think Lampard is a great price to be fair. He has been one of the top goalscorers in the Premier League over the last few seasons.

Ronaldo looks decent value at 16s.. I'd go for Fabiano.

Aguero or Milito could be outside bets, but with Messi, Higuain, Tevez, he has too many options there! I'd back Forlan, but I don't see Uruguay getting far enough for him to have a chance.

11, 10 and 12 in the PL for the past 3 seasons. He certainy gets goals but nt enough to be Top Goalscorer in a cometition like the WC imo. He's certainly worth an each way bet.

Luis Fabiano will get the Golden Boot

Yeah, I think this will count against Tevez, Huguain and even Messi - it's tough to be prolific in a changing, uncertain team.

One of the top-scoring midfielders. He only got 4 in qualifying, and England's group was p*ss poor.

How many places does e/w cover?

Four, which would mean that whoever you picked would need to come at least second because normally at least 3 players get the silver boot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    C Ronaldo (Portugal) 16/1
    R Van Persie (Holland) 25/1

    Are outstanding bets imo.

Fabiano yeah would be a very good bet. Brazil on what i saw of them in Conferedations cup will take some stopping. After that Messi another to look out for. Problem with backing either villa or torres is that the goals will probably be shared between them.

I can see where your coming from with his 1 in 2 games this season, but WC top scorer? I doubt it. Especially as Low like to keep him defending on that wing. He can score, worth a punt.

Higuain is playing wonderfully this season, it would be a waste of money though. Maradona like's to change way too much for any consistency. Otherwise it would be a great bet.

My top 5 scorer's would be (Along with the Bookmaker's):

Villa, Rooney, Fabiano, Messi and Torres. Pretty obvious I know. But Spain are bound to get a good few goals out of there group. Can see their Goal's Scored at 8-10 coming out of that group.

Rooney and Fabiano are usual suspects and have to come out with at least 2-4 goals from their groups.

Messi never really has played is best stuff for Argentina but I think he'll do a job in the WC. Can see him scoring 5 or 6 depending on how Argentina do.

But my favourite has to be Rooney.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar, if he starts will be the top scorer in the Holland team with the load of creative players that he will be playing alongside. 33-1 thank you very much. Ronaldo too is a fantastic price but I think he's in a tough group (?)

I wouldn't go near either van Persie or Huntelaar, because that Holland team are unlikely to get past the quarter finals.

The top scorer will come from a semi-finalist. The extra two games played by those four teams will make the difference. When's the last time the golden boot winner was eliminated before then?

In 94 Salenko (Russia) was joint winner with Stoichkov on 6 goals each. Russia failed to get out of their group. Salenko scored 5 goals in one match against Cameroon.

Germany lost in the semi's in 2006 (i know...) with Klose as the tournaments top goal scorer, but he didn't score in either the semi or the third/fourth place play-off.

Oleg Selenko was joint top in 1994, without even getting out of the group stage (all 5 goals coming in one game).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,587 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Selenko, I'll accept. Still, bit of a freak stat!

However, while Klose didn't score in the last two games of the tournament, Germany's presence in the semi-finals deprived rivals the chance to do so.

In a tournament with so few games, you have to imagine that the top scorers will also have played the most minutes.

For an outright golden boot winner to not have played in a semi-final, you have to go all the way back to Eusebio in 1966.

True, but Holland had many different goalscorers who had 2 each or so.
In the qualifications, although in a pretty weak group, they didnt score that many

Wesley Sneijder might be worth a gamble.

Holland definitely team to watch out for in terms of first goal scorer. Think a quarter final semi final place within them.

Since the Golden Boot award has come into play a striker has always won it apart from when Stoichkov shared it with Oleg Salenko.

    I give you that.
But...During Hollands last games they had Van Persie up front on his own.
If a midfielder will top the list, it will be a Dutch one. But for a midfielder to get on top it also needs to be the guy who takes te penalties.

In tournaments like the WC there is always this freak game with a high score in which 1 player score 3 or 4. And because of that 1 game ends up in the top of the list.
Best example of that was indeed Salenko.

Adriano seems to have played pretty well since back in Brazil. If he makes the WC squad....
